Product Description

Product Description

From the perspective of an 'average' infantry battalion raised from volunteers in 1914, this work shows the development of the battle tactics and the organizational and technical advances of the British army that took it from a small army to being the most powerful force in Europe.

5.0 out of 5 stars humanises history, 9 May 2007

I am not into WW1 or history in general but this book was given to me. It instructs you on the history of WW1 in general but to one regiment in particular. This has allowed the author to tell you about some of the individuals who fought. It personalises history and demonstrates the tragedy of war and how it affected those individuals. The reasearch is thorough, the diagrams interesting, and the photographs well chosen. The author writes with authority and enthusiastically. This is instructional but it is written in such a way that it is a good read. One is left with the feeling that lives of so many brave men was taken for granted and thrown away for the gain of a few yards. Tragic.
