"Fills a significant gap in the blacksmithing press." --"Appalachian Blacksmiths Association Newsletter"

Product Description

Hot-forging iron - blacksmithing- is a craft that evokes a passion, yet demands commitment from practitioners because it is just too much like hard work to undertake lightly. In recent years it has grown and flourished, yet remains a unsung craft success story. Contemporary forged architectural metalwork can now be seen all over Britain, but the names of the makers are far less well known that those of people in other crafts. Good architectural metalwork comes into its own as part of a particular building or space. A good gate, grille or balustrade looks so self-evidently right in its setting, that is origin seems almost beyond question. Written by a leading artist blacksmith, and illustrated with one hundred and eighty photographs and fifty drawings by the author, "Forged Architectural Metalwork" discusses design, construction, finishing and installation; and describes the wide range of concerns and skills required by smiths working in the architectural field today.

A large bag of tricks 30 Mar 2007
By P. Casey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book gives a glimpse at some of the fine ironwork produced in Great Britain today. Without the documentation that this book provides, this work would go largely unnoticed outside of the area in which it is installed. The scale of the work shown is from intimate to substantial.

For the medium-small size of the book, it provides a delightful amount of information. The author is familiar with the various techniques mentioned and treats his fellow smiths with respect. While no book on this subject could be all-inclusive, there is likely to be something of interest for the beginning level smith to the advanced professional. The topic of design is nicely mentioned and would be a valuable resource for design professionals.
This book is a valued addition to my library.

Good resource for profesional blacksmiths 3 Jan 2007
By D. Morse - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a very good resource for the modern blacksmith. Well written and plenty of illustrations and photos to clarify the text. A must for anyone who is serious about being a professional in the trade.
An unusually advanced book 26 Oct 2008
By J. Cunningham - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
While I can't call myself a professional blacksmith I've spent much of the last 25 years involved with ornamental and architectural iron. Of late I've been trying to expand my metalworking skills, particularly in the area of forging. I've come across many good books on basic blacksmithing, but this book is unusual in its broad and deep discussion of the structure, design and installation of large architectural pieces. While I wish it had a more in depth description of the forging techniques used in the large works that are it's primary focus, it is an extremely good value and if you're doing large work and installations it will easily pay for itself by helping you avoid many expensive mistakes. I wish I'd bought it years ago. It also includes great pictures of European work.
