What is going on ? ....I mean , the airwaves are polluted by aeorated light weight singer/song writers with songs so vapid they can be dispersed with vanilla air freshener yet this album, a positively heroic collection of poignant torch songs and scorchingly intense up-tempo numbers, has not so much been ignored as probably doesn't actually exist except in my fevered imagination.
In which case I am a lucky man .Forever is an album that should have garlands hung around it's neck , it's own CD print in some music walk of fame somewhere, it should have won a Grammy crossed with a Nobel prize( a grabby?) for services to music so gorgeous that anyone who hears it instantly forgets all their petty grievances and bows to it's heart melting gorgeousness. This album could end all world conflicts ....are you listening Gordon Brown?
Released in 1992 ,Forever is the debut solo album from Simon Bonney , the only permanent member of the rather forbidding Crime And The City Solution. Very little of their output gave hints as to what delights his solo work would invoke. Forever is a mix of quite stunning ballads-The title track ,"Ravenswood", "Saw You Falling" and punchier tracks such as "Like Caesar Needs A Brutus" and "Someone Loves You". It's lyrically deft with "Like Caesar Needs A Brutus" -a tale of tow lovers who are poison to each other particularly outstanding . And while the instrumentation is disarmingly simple , mostly acoustic or electric guitar, percussion and bass with the occasional embellishment of strings or piano the songs are complex and dense with detail. Most importantly they are thornily emotional with the title track a song as good as anything masters of the affecting ballad -American Music Club, The Blue Nile, Nick Cave, -have ever produced.

Forever - Simon Bonney 11 July 2001
By James Michael Royal - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
What has happened to this guy's career is a crime. This Australian expatriot was an early crony of Nick Cave when Bonney fronted the band Crime and the City Solution. Both of his solo albums are now out of print but are well worth the effort to track down used. His second release, Everyman is an absolutely fantastic record based on Bonney's recent move to the states and travelling around the country in an old car. This record is almost that good. His deep baritone will hold your attention much like Mr. Cave's without the old testament references. A great artist with no marketable career, unfortunately this is a story that seems to happen again and again.

RAIN ON ME 13 Aug 2013
By K. H. Orton - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Best known as the singer of Crime & The City Solution and the serpentine singer of "Six Bells Chime" from Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire, Simon Bonney has often been written off as a Nick Cave crony. Or at worse an imitator. Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, they both have dark songs & and deep voices. Both shared the same musical collaborators in Mick Harvey and Rowland S. Howard. And yes, they both hail from Australia. But musically, paths couldn't differ more.

Forever is a case in point. The dark musings of Crime are swept away for a slow burning, haunted Folk Rock album of love lorn ballads. An opiate atmosphere of driving on the backroads in perpetual twilight. Owing far more to Gene Clark, Mickey Newbury and Hank Williams than to Crime & The City or Nick Cave. Fiddles and reverb drenched slide guitar abound. "Ravenswood" begins with a simple statement of purpose, "I'm going to Ravenswood to see my life change". The yearning "A Part of You" brings Neil Young's "Helpless" to mind at times. "Like A Caesar Needs A Brutus" is a wry, Hate-to-Love-You song, taking the old Country model and giving it a literate twist of the ear. The gorgeous "Saw You Falling" might be the album's most quietly arresting moment. "Someone Loves You" verges on tongue & cheek Gospel. Crime & City's darkness creeps in on "Now That She's Gone", a song that would fit all too easily on a David Lynch soundtrack. All crooned in Bonney's smokey baritone.

From start to finish, there's a warmth and simplicity here, something missing from media circus where recording artists feel compelled to make spectacles out of themselves in order to appear relevant. Here Bonney steps away from all that, standing far from the maddening crowd, driving on, keeping an eye out for new horizons.

This is an overlooked gem of a record by an overlooked gem of an artist. And his last for nearly 2 decades. Then suddenly he broke his silence after having relocated to the USA. In 2010 he brought us "Everyman", the result of traveling around his new adopted country in an battered, old jalopy. And if that weren't enough, 2013 saw the release of a dark, rousing new Crime in the City Solution. Both as good as his best.
