Gusgus have returned to the fold after 2002's Attention. Like that release, Forever, mines the dance scene for its tracks once again. Like Attention, when I first played it, it was OK, but with repeated plays, has gone up in my estimations.
For me, the interest in Attention started to peter out after around the sixth track with the remainder being inconsistent. That inconsistency is spread throughout Forever. Whilst when the tracks are done well, they are done brilliantly (for me, You'll Never Change is an album highlight), some are just a little too repetitive for my liking (I am thinking of the track Porn, in particular). Interestingly, there is a track, Lust, which is given in a live and studio version - the live version is so much better showing off what Gusgus do live. Haveing been to a Gusgus concert on the Attention tour, I can attest that the live Gusgus experience is everything live dance music should be about. In the studio, however, some of those dynamics are lost, so whilst Forever is a good album (and I would much rather listen to it than anything in the charts these days), it is not truly great.
For true Gusgus greatness, refer to their first album, Polydistortion, and if you can get it, Mix@Respect. The latter is very hard to get but is truly amazing, fully documenting the highs of the live Gusgus sound.
