Book Description

25 July 2002

A book to read and reread, this reissue brings back to print an unforgettable romance and a timeless masterpiece.

Abandoned pregnant and penniless on the teeming streets of London, sixteen-year-old Amber St. Clare uses her wits, beauty and courage to climb to the highest position a woman could achieve in Restoration England - that of favourite mistress of the Merry Monarch himself, Charles II.

From whores and highwaymen to courtiers and noblemen, from the Great Plague and the Fire of London to the intimate passions of ordinary - and extraordinary - men and women, Amber experiences it all. But throughout her trials and escapades, she remains, in her heart, true to the one man she really loves, the one man she can never have ...

From the Publisher

DAILY EXPRESS:
"FOREVER AMBER, a naughty great doorstep of a book published in 1944, did for Restoration England what GONE WITH THE WIND had done for the Old South...The passage of time has meant that a book considered raunchy and risque on publication is now viewed as a classic."

5.0 out of 5 stars 17th centuary romp 12 May 2007
By Emma
Format:Paperback
I first read 'Forever Amber' about 20 years ago. Since then I've re-read it many times. Each time I've enjoyed the adventure of the young maid Amber who manages to pursuade the handsome Bruce Carlton to take her to London in 1660. Only the be left alone & pregnant, in an unfriendly city, at a time women had no rights of their own. How would she get by?

Amber pulls herself back from the brink of disaster, and climbs to the dizzy heights of the court of King Charles II.

Love, love, love, love, love, LOVE this book.

If you enjoy a bit of romance, dramam and history, this book is a must. I've recently found that almost everyone I work with has read and enjoyed this book. Just thinking about it makes me want to read it again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Forever Amber : A romping bodice ripper! 23 Jun 2003
Format:Paperback
This has to be one of the ultimate novels that I have ever read. When I picked it up and brought it home my Mother warned me that work as an English teacher would pale into insig ificance. Believe me, I have read a lot of books, literary value, merit and not. I had never heard of this but was taken by the topic as one I had studied myself many years before. You will not be disappointed by this novel. Deliciously chunky, frightfully addictive and completely unputdownable, I was thrilled from page one...you are hooked from the moment that you meet the ravishing and delightful Amber St Clare
I loved being whisked through the court of Charles II and almost believing that I was stepping back into 1660 with the characters; surely if you read nothing else all summer make time for this novel, it is one that you will never forget having read and never regret having picked up.
It's both voluptuous, historically amazing and an incredibly rewarding read; personally it was worth waking at 5am to read it and I hate early starts but I had to find time to read this novel just to find out if Amber would really meet a truely happy ending or not.....
From my mother's generation to mine, it's a real classic and I'm so pleased to have found it and read it.

Almost 25 years ago I first read this fantastic history packed romantic classic of life in the mid 1600's and since lost numerous copies to friends and family. The descriptions of countryside, towns, costumes and characters in general are so vivid that you immediately are drawn in to the plots and subterfuges throughout this good-sized novel. Charting the life of Amber along a rags to riches journey through life from child to mature lady (during which she became the first choice mistress to the king) we are educated and mesmerised through experiences of village life to Lords and Ladies, the succession of Charles 1st to Charles 2nd and the Plague, Black Death to the Great Fire of London. Throughout you live Amber's highs and lows, loves and losses as herself, a close relative or guardian. It would be hard to not align sympathy and empathy with all her emotions through every event that only adds to the readers' entrapment to the last pages.

One warning, once opened this book will lose you hours, as you will not want to put this book down until the last page has been read. The story flows from the first page and sub plots like in real life are interwoven throughout. A must read.

It is a great read and inspiration, as it will no doubt be for my daughter, as this is Amber's 21st birthday present....
