When I say 'smooth-jazz' what I actually mean is 'muzak'. Yes, you too can own the elevator versions of some of Luther's finest. Don't get me wrong, I like smooth jazz, but these are basic cover versions (mostly without vocals other than background karaoke-style backing) and lack anything like the real depth of the originals.
Particularly annoying is Dance With My Father, a sad song that should send a shiver down your spine - but this version is poor, warm and sadly lacking in any emotion (except tedium, maybe).
The notable exception to my disapointment is Lalah Hathaway's version of For Ever, For Always... Lalah is a superb singer and she does perform it with a nice interpretation. This is the saving grace that lets me give the album an extra star!
If you love Luther, I really would be surprised if you liked this. If you like the style of music it offers, you might find solace at your local DIY store!
I would have much rather seen some of Luther's closest friends and singers (Beyonce, Dionne Warwick, Aretha, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, et al) performed their favourite Luther songs - what an album that would be.
