More About the Author

Sara Knight is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Anglia Ruskin University, a Forest School level 3 practitioner, and a founder committee member of the Institute for Outdoor Learning Forest School Special Interest Group. Trained as a drama teacher but with gardening grandparents, Sara has found working with children in the early years an excellent way to combine creativity with a love of the outdoors. Sara ran her own nursery class, then worked in a Special School before moving into the FE and HE sectors. Alongside this, she worked with the Green Light Trust in Suffolk, latterly launching Forest School across the eastern region, running her own Forest School sessions and being involved with training. In 2009 she published "Forest Schools and Outdoor Play in the Early Years", and recently publish "Risk and Adventure in Early Years Outdoor Play: learning from Forest School".

Review

'Despite the variety of contributors and their projects, the editor has achieved a consistence of tone and style in the writing, which is engaging and accessible'
-Valerie Huggins, Early Years

'[The editors] lead a mystery tour of learning in nature and nature in learning. I particularly delighted in the account of the practicalities of urban comprehensive pupils weaving together saplings along a trail as part of their 'Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning'. This book turns a dry Faculty of Public Health report green' -
Times Higher Education

'Yet again Sara has managed to capture the essence of Forest School. The varied case studies explore how the Forest School ethos applies across a wide range of clients, and demonstrate precisely why so many talented and enlightened practitioners are using Forest School with learners, especially those who don't fit in with the constraints of mainstream education' -
Susannah Podmore, FEI Coordinator, Forestry Commission England

"Knight offers a needed addition to scholarship on outdoor and hybrid environmental curriculum, with a keen modeling accommodation for diverse and special-needs learners. The book's strength is that it provides a methodology for implementation of outdoor experiential education curriculum and assessment in independent and charter schools." (L.H. Taylor Jr. CHOICE Magazine 2012-09-01)

I bought this book as a resource to help me gain more information about teaching the Forest School ethos to my college students, both in the classroom and on their early years placements. I also hoped it would contain enough information to ignite my dream of setting up my own business and enable me to use my recent purchase of woodland (which I purchased after researching the benefits of Forest Schools for a lesson to college students)with my family.
This book certainly lived up to my expectations! It is divided into different chapters each written by someone who has experienced leading Early years,SEN and teenagers/adults all of which interest me professionally and personally.
This is exactly what I wanted to read about! I could read case studies and form my own opinions from these experiences covering all ages that I personally come into contact with. (Early years placements and FE students ranging from level 1 - 3).
I quickly realised that I was reading something that completely supported my own thinking but up until recently had not given it a title or direction......
I have only just finished the book after reading it from cover to cover this weekend while camping in a field with my children.. so will need time to process some of my thoughts.. but feel mixed emotions as although I understand the benefits I may need to persuade my colleaques to realise that nature can support nurture...
For me it was like coming home and I agree with the statement on the back cover "..will be enthused and inspired by this book"....It worked for me!

Really informative look at lots of different aspects of Forest School. Some inspiring examples of good practice & encourages reflection. Would have been 5 stars but for the fact that one or two chapters weren't as well written/thought out as all the rest.
Definitely worth buying.
