In many of the dummies serie I learn a lot. In this one no so much, there was a lot of examples but little explanation about techniques and particular cases analysis. In my opunion is too basic. The positive is that because is non technical is an easy read.

Great for Students But Needs Some Updating 1 April 2011
By Michael Gallagher - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
To start off, I am a CPA with 20 years of professional experience so I do have a little bit of a background with the topics in this book. I found a lot of it interesting and some of it understandably basic considering my background but not a detriment to this book.

I think the authors do a great job providing high-level examples of the types of fraud that can occur as well as specific examples they or associates of theirs have run across in their careers. Nothing beats hearing the war stories of the type of company, type of fraud, how the fraud was pulled off and, ultimately, how the perpetrator was caught.

If you are a student in high school or college (or thinking about college) and not sure of what you may want to do or doing investigations of various career paths armed with an accounting degree, I would highly recommend this book. You will probably need to have a slight bit - but not much - of an understanding of accounting, but you certainly don't need to understand intricate debits and credits.

One of the advertisements on the back covers says "detect the perpetrators of fraud and their methods by using the latest technology and investigative tools." That's largely misleading as while the book has a plethora of examples, many of them are dated such as the stores that still use pneumatic tubes for cash receipts and many other cash-intensive examples. With the majority of today's transactions occurring with a credit card, the authors may want to consider a refresh of some of the examples cited.

All-in-all, I think this is a very good overview of the field and should help some students out in their career choices, but not so informative for really learning the latest techniques and fraud occurring in today's society.

This book lists itself as being for dummies. In this case, only a dummy should buy it, because that is the only person who would find this wikipedia entry on accounting useful. It is not practical or useful. It is mildly interesting at best. Skip this book and find a real primer on forensic accounting.

Great book if you are an accountant and want to expand into forensic accounting... 6 Nov 2011
By FlyingPolarBear - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
If you mistakenly think that forensic accountants try to discover fraudulent activities all day and all night long, then this book is for you. Just like most other "For Dummies" series, this book is a good introduction to the subject.

There are total six parts and 26 chapters in the book. My favorite chapters are: 2, 4, 18 and 26.

Chapter 2: Steering Your Career toward Forensic Accounting

In this chapter, the authors give some valuable advice for anyone who wants to become a forensic accountant. Everyone has to start somewhere in this specialty, and I think authors guide their audience in the right direction.

Chapter 4: Forensic Accounting MINUS the Fraud

When someone says forensic accounting, first thing come to mind is fraud. However, these days forensic accountants do more than uncovering fraud. This section provides great information about what other areas forensic accountants can get involved.

Chapter 18: Organizing Evidence and Serving as an Expert Witness

If you always wanted to become a lawyer but ended up as an accountant, there is still hope for you! This chapter covers all about becoming expert witness and what is expected from you as an expert witness.

Chapter 26: Ten Truly Strange Fraud Stories

Even though I really like this chapter of the book, I don't think the stories were "truly strange" rather they were interesting to read and discover what crazy things people do while committing fraud.

I am taking off 1 star due to misleading statement in the back of the book. Not enough details are mentioned in the book to claim that one can "Detect the perpetrators of fraud and their methods by using the latest technology and investigative tools." In fact, I came across only one page in the book about 2-3 investigative tools which are widely used by any big firms.

Overall, it is easy to read and understand. However, that being said, I don't think it is a replacement book for any accounting class one may take in the future.
