5.0 out of 5 stars A Portrait of Forgiveness 10 Jun 2007
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I saw this moving drama when it was shown on British TV and thought it was one of the realistic and generous tributes to those who survived the Second World War and are coping still with the emotional aftermath. A group of veterans gather for a battlefield reunion in Northern Europe and not everything or everyone is as they might first appear to be. I won't spoil the story for you but things gradually unfold to reveal not just some the events which the characters have survived but the strength and greatness of their spirits. The setting is lovely and the acting - as one would expect from such a star-studded cast - impeccable!

Although the material is serious, it is dealt with in a gentle manner and had its funny moments so it made for extremely watchable TV without fear of any unpleasant flashbacks. (In other words, sensitive older people would not find it distressing.) At long last this BBC drama is available on Region 2 DVD for Europeans. Try not to miss it - it is one of the best dramas from Britain.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Foreign Field (DVD) (1933) 28 May 2009
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you haven't seen 'A Foreign Field' don't delay. We taped this drama when shown on BBC TV some years ago and it instantly became an absolute favourite. It really is wonderful. Sometimes extremely funny, sometimes quite emotional and very moving. The acting is superb, the occasional background music perfect - you would not want to change a single thing. When we noticed that it was now available as a DVD we did not hesitate for a moment to make this purchase. It was something that was so precious. We bought a second copy to add to a gift for someone. It seems that this lady and her husband had seen it once and from then on had wanted to own a copy for themselves. They were delighted. This is a story you will long remember but no doubt return to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Foreign Field 26 Jan 2008
Format:DVD
I first watched this when it was released on TV in the UK in 1993. Fortunatley I taped it as I knew it would be something special, simply by looking at the cast. It was and still is one of the most moving, funny and uplifting films I have ever seen. It is a one off special and I'm amazed it has taken 15 years to release! Buy it and you'll not be disappointed. All my family love it and it is a firm favourite. Fantastic!
