Product Description

Product Description

Computer-based forecasting methods are no longer restricted to the traditional statistical methods. Knowledge-based approaches, which utilise the knowledge gained from human experts in their construction, and machine learning methods in which the computer learns from available examples without significant human intervention are now in general use as forecasting tools. In Forecasting Methods For Horseracing Dr Peter May examines the application of these methods to the domain of horseracing in Great Britain and overseas and provides a detailed step-by-step guide to implementing these methods.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great book - bad Kindle edition, 1 Oct 2010
The content of this book is really useful. He breaks down 3 approaches to forecasting horse results, covering the typical and important pieces of data you would would leverage. The three approaches are rule based, assessment based on value attributes and basically neural networks. So not only does he cover each of these in some depth but shows you how to mine and shape the data to be able to build your own systems.

The book itself is great, *** BE WARNED: the Kindle edition is incomplete***. I was really disappointed because it contains none of the figures or tabular data. That means you are only getting half the book, and you really cannot follow some points of explanation at all as a result. I separately bought the epdf version which has all this information.

2.0 out of 5 stars What is Neural Network? To be frank, I can't understand., 25 Aug 2005
By Klinsmann - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Forecasting Methods for Horseracing (Hardcover)
This book tells you 3 kinds of forecasting method namely The Rule-Based Approach, the Knowledge-based Approach and the Neural Network Approach.

The most important message that this books wants to deliver is the Neural Network Approach. To be frank, I have read this book twice but I still cannot understand what Neural Network is. The most difficult part is that the author mentioned that Neural Network has to be "trained" but unfortunately he did not clearly explain how the training works. This book eventually taught me nothing new about horse racing forecasting. I am quite disappointed after reading this book.
