forbidden city,

This review is from: The Forbidden City (Wonders of the World) (Hardcover)
This excellent book is best acknowledged for its "add ons"rather than its main text. These extras include a)introduction-which is really a potted history b)a readers guide-a very short guide to some of the buildings in the city c)emperors and their names-defining the Ming and Qing dynastys d)a timeline-this is the best part of tye book-identifying what happened when(1368-2008) e)the dates of the Ming and Qing rulers f)a guided tour of the city and g)an extensive further reading list
The main text is adequate for the general reader but not for the specaliet. The major criticism of tha book is the presentation of the illustrations which is abysmal-they are not on picture receptive paper and no attempt has been made to enhance then.

Not worth reading.,

This review is from: The Forbidden City (Wonders of the World) (Hardcover)
Forbidden City by G R Barme is a frustrating book. the text switches from era to era without any common thread. It leaves the reader intensely annoyed as there seems to be no reason for the continual change of time in the narrative. I didn't want a strict history of the City with everything exactly in chronological order but G R Barme jumps backwards and forwards so much that you become confused and irritated. He also seems to be obsessed with modern (last 50 to 70 years) use of the City, especially for films and performances, this, coupled with a section on Starbucks and why it was removed gives one the impression that it is written for the 'celeb' fashion of today. The photographs are very second rate with many being completely out of focus. I learned very little about the long and varied history of the City and felt that it had been a real waste of my time. Don't bother buying it unless you are interested in the nebulous information on who used it for what film and when.

Great book about the forbidden city. If you like ancient chinese history and are fascinated at how the Forbidden city came to be then get this book.
