BBC Review

Despite his stage name, Troy Andrews is also an adept trumpeter, which allows him to hog most of the brass band action down in his native New Orleans. Even though a classic street-marching sound forms the heart of his music, Trombone Shorty has already steered towards more mainstream pop/rock/rap/funk quarters. Indeed, his current tactics seem to call for mass commercial success, whilst still just about retaining his Trem roots (Andrews appeared in four episodes of the recent TV series).

The required move for such overground aspirations is to corral a starry, guest-studded roster. With guitarists Warren Haynes, Jeff Beck and Lenny Kravitz on board, plus vocalists Kid Rock and Ledisi, Shorty has succeeded in spades. Despite this motley bunch, the album's sound hasn't become a random genre gumbo. Well, it might have, anyway, but that would be down to Shorty's already all-embracing interest in a variegated stylistic approach.

The production is bullish and fully-aroused, densely aggressive with horny stabs. The beats are colossal but a touch too metronomic, although the higher frequencies provide a welcome jostling looseness. Shorty oscillates between trombone and trumpet solos, with the latter unsurprisingly cutting through with greater agility.

Haynes completely dominates Encore (the second track) with his signature slide howl, and Beck maintains the microtonal excitement during Do to Me. This last song illustrates Shorty's rather basic lyrical preferences, targeted at the charts, as if they still mattered. The title cut sounds like Dick Dale surfing over mechanoid beats, whilst Shorty spits trumpet sparks at length.

The Craziest Thing is neither one thing nor another, sounding like Shorty's trying to be all things to all folks. Dumaine St has a harder confluence of New Orleans jazz and hardass rawk, but Roses features vocals that are annoyingly poppy, like a sub-standard Prince, but with some substantial instrumental licks. Unc is the oddest track, part Balkan horns, part tango undertow, reminiscent of the Gotan Project. Once again, Shorty steps forward for a fluttering trumpet solo. Ledisi sings the swaying slowie Then There Was You, topped by another Shorty solo as she takes the song higher and higher.

Troy Andrews, know as Trombone Shorty is clearly a huge talent and plays and writes the vast majority of the material here - adding virtuoso Trombone and Trumpet as well as singing.

First track : "Buckjump" has a massive brass band adding to the normal Orleans Avenue band, who are getting great notices in the US as one of the best live bands around at the moment. Funky synth bass and brass workouts.

Next up, "Encore" veers more into rock territory, with Warren Hayes providing the Bluesy solos. The title track is back to the brass and a variation of a hip hop beat - with thrilling trumpet, presumably from the man himself, taking time off the trombone!

First of the real celebrity guest stars is Jeff Beck sharing solos with Troy and the band - "Do to me" is a real song that could even be a chart hit - rock/funk hybrid with commercial vocals. Although fans will be more interested in the Trombone vs. Guitar solo duel, where each seems to inspire the other.

"Lagniappe" veers off into New Orleans Jazz territory, with a solid beat - but is all about the horns and fades in and out in two parts, that sound improvised. But we are quickly back to more commercial rocking territory for "The Craziest Things" which sound quite ordinary compared to the huge funky sound of "Dumaine St." - which has a great New Orleans feel and tremendous, tight ensemble playing.

Then we are onto our next name guest, Kid Rock on "Mrs. Orleans". As you would expect from the title : a Gumbo rhythm and swirling horns make for a characterful tune, which again is commercial enough for a single.

From the nature of this music you would expect that Troy is heavily-influenced by the Neville Brothers and they appear as guests on the next tune "Nervis". This has great funky bass and trumpet is to the fore again in place of Trombone. Amazing clavinet solo and distinctive vocals from the guests.

"Roses" takes us in another direction and sounds more like a Lenny Kravitz tune that has found it's way here - despite being written by TS. Lenny's presence is all through this and it feels like nothing else. "BIG 12" sounds...well Big! Tight ensemble and great solos all round. "UNC" is an overdubbed "tour de force" for Troy alone - with programmed rhythm and effects supporting multiple brass.

"Then There Was You" is a blues-inspired ballad sung by Ledisi in a great soul style - again a well-written song that could stand up to Radio Airplay.

All the tracks are short and concise. While inspired by New Orleans Jazz and Funk, they are mixed with more commercial elements of Rock ,Blues and Soul to produce a number of tracks that could easily be played on the Radio and sound good. The playing and character of the leader and the band make this special though and I would love to hear some longer tracks with extended solos over their tight New Orleans grooves.

Still, who can complain with 14 tracks and cameos from several big name guests?
