The other review is not exactly helpful, as it appears to be ignorant of the other White Fence releases. This album is not 'lo-fi' in the way that the earlier White Fence albums are lo-fi. Maybe it's lo-fi if you compare it to the latest Coldplay album or some rubbish like that. This is White Fence's first proper studio album, having gained promotion to a top indie label (Drag City). The previous albums were recorded somewhat muddily at home on four track, and this cheap low fidelity sound was one of their central appeals. When you clean up the sound, the songs necessarily have to be a bit stronger, as there's nothing to hide behind, and to be fair, Tim Presley serves up a pretty good collection of pop songs here, although the invention of the previous work is largely absent. It was probably inevitable that he would take that step towards mainstream respectability, the way various other maverick acts have also, but I still wish he was recording on his four track, regardless of whether the results were particularly listenable or not. He can still go back to that, I guess, but I don't know whether he will or not. To appreciate his muse at its inventive peak get 'Is Growing Up' and 'Family Perfume vols 1 and 2 ' (the latter seventy nine minutes of loose and magical lofi sixties-influenced nonsense). This album is worth having if you're a fan of the guy's work, it's pretty solid fare from start to finish with Arrow Man possibly topping the bill, but the earlier stuff was just more compelling, in my opinion.

Low fi magic with a flavour of the notorious Byrd brothers era byrds I love this album. It has a retro feel but is lifted into modernity by its lofi production and subject matter

Jangly garage goodness! 3 Aug. 2014
By Lawrence F. Hill III - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I'm not sure what one of the other reviewers was talking about, but this is AMAZING! It's accessible and it's just sheer garage genius! It's more appealing than the other albums where it is very catchy as opposed to lots of filler with a few random songs that are catchy. It's very jangly and melodic! HIGHLY recommended! Tim Presley hit a home run with this one!!

an understated masterpiece of 60s flavored retro-psychedelic pop 9 Sept. 2014
By Charlie Quaker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
7th album in the last four years from California band led by Tim Presley (Strange Boys, Darker My Love). White Fence play captivating & realistic sounding 60s influenced pop with a natural nostalgic sheen that’s slightly under-produced and warm, trailing black-light melodies in a harmony-sparkled glow of hook-driven beauty. The songs feel fresh & genuine; the vocals are spot-on hippy-trippy sharp; the guitars & keys bleed flower-power authenticity. Includes contributions from Ty Segall (Epsilons), Nick Murray (the Young Veins) & Mikal Cronin. Reminiscent of bands like Elf Power, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Mmoss/Doug Tuttle, the Byrds, Brian Jonestown Massacre, the High Dials, the Who, Beachwood Sparks, the Limiñanas, Robyn Hitchcock. “For the Recently Found Innocent” is an understated masterpiece of 60s flavored retro-psychedelic pop. Brilliant.

One of the Best Indie Rock Records of 2014! 18 Sept. 2014
By JB Stone - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Vinyl
This is a must-have, must-hear record to own and cherish. I am transported to another time and place listening to these songs, a retro sound but with a very modern, even futuristic vibe and moody feel. Whatever previous White Fence records sounded like (and I truly don't know, this is my first) there is nothing low-fi about this. Sounds outstanding on my HiFi. And the songs, not a throwaway here. Hard to describe but it reminds me of a Ray Davies record if the Kinks had never existed. This should be on every critics best of year list, and yours.
A great mix of rock sub-genres represented from start to finish 21 Nov. 2014

I stumbled across this via Amazon's recommendation and am impressed. Never heard of the band, but definitely enjoying the record. A great mix of rock sub-genres represented from start to finish. Some psych-folk, psych-pop, a smattering of acoustic, honky tonk ballads and more. All of it very good.
Great Psychedelic Garage Rock 13 Aug. 2014
By Michael Cole - Published on Amazon.com

This is reminiscent of early Pink Floyd (Piper At The Gates Of Dawn) and Syd Barrett's solo albums. Recorded in Ty Segall's garage on an 8 track recorder. Put this on and jump back to the late 60s Psychedelic Rock scene.
