This is an interesting collectiion for several reasons. It was the return of the Watersons to recording, after a period of "retirement", personnel changes and solo projects (some of which were ...no, I'm too polite!), and the new line-up included Martin Carthy. Carthy was fresh from his time with Steeleye Span, and it is fascinating to hear how much his singing style had been influenced by Maddy Prior, with all the sliding and slurring, and therefore what subtle changes were wrought to the Watersons' sound. The songs themselves are wonderful, from the charming wassail songs about drinking and cider ("Apples, capfulls, three-bushel bagfuls, little heaps under the stairs - hip hip hooray!")to one of Michael W's own songs, Three Day Millionaire, about Hull fishermen, which is so funny, and so real. There are some real gems here, and it's probably the best Watersons album other than Frost and Fire.

I purchased this recording on vinyl and have been delighted by the quality of unaccompanied singing by such fine musicians. The tracks transport you back to the 19th century without the aid of electronic enhancement or digital re-mastering. There aren't many recordings of this quality which is a great pity.

watersons spicy ale 8 Mar 2011

"For pence and spicy ale" is a fabulous album and marked a return to recording back in 1975 after a few years break. The last album had been "A Yorkshire garland" from 1966. So this was a long time coming but it was worth the wait because this was such a great album. Mike Lal, and Norma Waterson are back and joined by Martin Carthy replacing John Harrison. Together they created a fantastic album and a handsome set of recordings.
The Watersons bring their own unique style of fantastic vocal arraignment to these songs that give them a special injection of life and enthusiasm. All of the songs are Traditional in origin.

This album contains some wonderful folk songs such as the idyllic "Country Life" a song from a time before agricultural revolution. There is the stage song "Barney" an early version of "my bonny lies over the ocean". Also there is the springtime song "Swinton May song" and "Apple tree wassail song" a lucky charm song from Devon and another luck charm song called "Malpas wassail song from Cornwall. The album set concludes with a lovely folk song called "The good old way". This song dates from the Great Awakening of religious dissenter groups. The Watersons go on to explore this area more in they later album "Sound, sound your instruments of joy" which I also recommend. Sound Sound Your Instruments of Joy

The album takes reference from oral tradition of country folk and other sources. The Watersons explore the folklore of Wassail songs, Vernacular carols and pious folk songs. It is a tremendous addition to recordings of English Traditional Folk songs. These songs should never be forgotten and these recordings by the Watersons are an important documentation of these great songs.
The recording sound is great. Topic records did a great job with the sound engineering.

This release is a welcome addition to the catalogue of British Folk associated recordings and will appeal to Christian historians and fans of the Watersons and Martin Carthy.
