Book Description

It is 1870 and railway workers and their families have flocked to the wild and inhospitable moorland known as Batty Green to build a viaduct on the Midland Railway Company’s ambitious new Leeds to Carlisle Line.

Among them are three very different women – tough widow Molly, honest and God-fearing Mary Pratt, and Helen Parker, downtrodden by her husband and seeking a better life.

When tragedy strikes, the lives of the three women are bound together, and each is forced to confront the secrets and calamities that threaten to tear their families apart.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read with a few twists and turns 29 April 2014

I enjoyed this book and felt it was a good read. A story based on the lives of the families that built the railways in this country. It's got a few sad parts and some tragedy, but as with most stories there is a happy ending. I thought it was good value for money through Kindle and would certainly consider other books from this author.

It's o.k.. Gets a bit soppy and predictable towards the end. The last 25% of the book could be reduced to two pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars A vivid portrayal of a well-known location 14 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although this starts off on a gloomy note with a baby dying and his mother, Molly, turning to drink in her grief, it's actually a very upbeat story. Based in the Ribble valley on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border (an area I'm quite familiar with) at the time of the building of the railway between Settle and Carlisle, including the fabulous viaduct, it's the stories of the navvies and their lives. From such gloomy beginnings, Molly pulls herself together so that she doesn't lose her daughter's love. I really felt involved in the lives of these characters. A recommended read to those who like family/regional sagas.
