Product Description

Product Description

Spirited, elegant, fun, with an enchanting authorial voice, For Matrimonial Purposes – a first novel which was the subject of a fierce international auction – is a remarkable achievement, an original in the contemporary women’s market.

The main character, Anju, born and raised in Bombay, is now a fashion journalist in New York. But twinned with her enjoyment of the American scene, her single, glamorous life and the fashion perks it brings, is her determination to remain true to her Indian roots and her love of her extensive family.

Marriage is the most important role for an Indian woman, and arranged marriages are still the custom: ‘I am not working for your happiness, but for you to be married,’ says Anju’s mother. Anju is 30, old in Indian terms, and her mother and aunt fear that her independent ways might make her less acceptable to other family’s eyes. They set about organising possible contacts in their home town, Bombay. But now a prospective bride or groom, or their families, can decline the suggested marriage after a meeting.

For Matrimonial Purposes is the hilarious, poignant, loving story of Anju’s journey, the rare selection of men and their families that she meets, and the choices that she must make while trying to remain true to herself and satisfy her family and tradition.

i have just finished reading this book and all i can say wow. Anju goes through every indina girls nightmare of not getting married. This book provides the reader the chance to laugh with Anju and sympothise with her when she is regected or fate doesn't go her way. This book is a must read if only to appreciate what it is like for a western girl going back to find her roots and fulfill her parents wishes.

Kavita has brilliantly captured the personality of this girl who is traditional at heart but has a mixture of western values. She is career driven, smart, ambitious and confident but yet she is seen as an outcast because she cannot get married. We see a sequence of men being introduced to her who through her parents, we witness the funny thoughts that are running her through mind each time she decides "he’s not the one". All in all it’s a very true portrayal of Indian society and how women are bullied into believing they are “past it” if they do not succumb to marriage. I loved it and I would recommend to everyone!!

A great read, I love the idea of a Bridget Jones outlook on life from an Indian perspective. It's everything an Indian Bridget Jones stylee book should be. Leaves you with a positive perspective and will give you a giggle.
