Book Description

5 Nov 2009
Hipgnosis was the biggest and best graphic design firm for the biggest and best bands of the 1960s and 1970s. Specialising in creative photography for the music business, they designed album covers for bands and musicians like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Electric Light Orchestra, Black Sabbath, Paul McCartney, Scorpions and many others. For the Love of Vinyl is the first book to survey Storm and Powell's output in detail - from cover to label - described with entertaining detail by the team who created them.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the love of the art for the vinyl 20 Jan 2010
By Smitty Werbenjaegermanjensen (real name) TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a book which just oozes sheer quality in every way. The heavy hard cover has vinyl grooves emulated on front and back. The book is really well bound, so no splitting at the seams as happens with a lot of these thicker books that need opened right out to see all of the images. It is a heavy book thanks to the use of a decent weight of china(looks like it to me, not that I am an expert in modern printing paper) paper. None of the images are printed across the spine, which is a major plus, as I have had books of similar cost splitting when they were opened out to see what was hidden in the depths of the spine crease.

The images are stunning when printed on high quality paper to the size used here. CD packaging is just not in the same league as this, not even close. All of the detail gets lost. The 12 by 12 inch"canvas" of the vinyl album was a superb format for sleeve designers to work in. A vinyl album sleeve afforded the designers enough space to add in details and information that could be enjoyed and looked again and again. CD sleeves are often designed on a large scale and then shrunk down to fit, thereby reducing detail and, quite often, text to a size that is a pain rather than a pleasure. Some CD sleeves have lyrics printed on them that are indecipherable, even with a magnifying glass, because the ink has bled slightly through the paper.

The text is straight to the point and is informative, interesting and humourous, with contributions from Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell mainly, along with contributions from Peter Blake, Nick Mason, Scott Rowley and others. There are insights into meetings with bands, brass necking, trips abroad on a whim paid for by record companies just to get a photo of a wave of a particular size and colour etc................

I was impressed with the range of artists that Hipgnosis have worked with over the years, from Black Sabbath, 10cc, The Scorpions, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd(possibly their best known customers) and many others that had slipped under my radar. All different and yet stamped with that Hipgnosis style.

All in all an essential book for any lover of photography, art and rock music in general. This book reminds those of us who grew up with vinyl of what is missing in the age of digital miniaturisation. Those who download are at an even greater loss.

If you are reading this then you must have an interest and all I would say is just go ahead and buy it, you will love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Maestros de las Portadas 15 July 2009
Format:Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS AMAZING! 3 Dec 2008
By D. Kupferschmidt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Everyone I've shown this book to has flipped over it. Ever page has either an amazing image that will make you drool or a curious anecdote that will leave you wanting to know so much more. One of the more interesting parts is discovering the processes behind these iconic covers, made on a budget with pre-digital techniques. In a time of recession woes it's good to remember that brilliance doesn't require deep pockets.

This book is incredible. 5 shining stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Timeless Book - Great Gift Too 8 Dec 2008
By A. Cowan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I really had no idea to expect when I picked this up, as I really didn't know the history or purpose behind it - and I was utterly impressed by the amount of music history and art included into one photo book. The images are amazing and crazy - especially for the years in which most of the stuff was done. This is a definite gift idea for both the art/photo lover AND the music lover from any of the bands that Hipgnosis created art for, like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Alan Parsons Project, to name a few. I bought it for my Dad, but I kinda wanted to keep it for myself. Sigh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiration 8 Dec 2008
By Benjamin H. Moody - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book is amazing! If you are addicted to design, this book will provide the fix. Seeing how all this iconic art was created, before digital media, really made my head spin. In the cover of "Houses Of The Holy" for instance, the technicolor rocks and children were all tinted by hand! Today it would only be a few clicks away. Take a ride down Psychedelic Blvd and read how your favorite album art was born! As a young designer or art student this book is a must have.
