Since he studied with Segovia and played with Django Reinhardt, one might expect the best from Charlie Byrd, and indeed over the years he won innumerable jazz polls. He brought the acoustic guitar back into jazz and used classical techniques in his jazz playing. He became famous with the bossa nova albums that he recorded with Stan Getz, and in the face of their success one sometimes forgot that he was an effective but never flashy jazz soloist too. This album is dedicated to music associated with Louis Armstrong. It was Byrd's last recording session before he died in December, 1999 and it was an unusual departure from the trio setting that he used so often. He added trumpeter Joe Wilder, one of the most accomplished trumpeters in any field, to take the role of Armstrong, although there is no attempt to evoke Louis's style, and added a saxophone and piano. "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" is the only Armstrong composition here, and Byrd was more concerned to reflect Louis's later years with "Kiss To Build A Dream On", "A Child Is Born" and, remembering the triumphant sessions with Ella Fitzgerald, "Autumn In New York".--Steve Voce
