Review

'There's action and passion galore in Joy Chambers' FOR FREEDOM. Set in the Pacific during World War II, lives go helter-skelter and the heroine, Lexie, finds herself married to one man, but in lust with another.'

(Australian Women's Weekly )

Product Description

Joy Chambers forthcoming historical novel is an epic and dramatic story set in the Phillipines during the Second World War.

It is a tangled story of two couples in love and war. In Hong Kong, before her marriage to John Drayton, Lexine has a night of passion with an American officer, which results in the birth of a baby boy.  Letting her husband believe their son is his child, they him bring up together until the war interrupts their lives.

Leaving home on a boat in a desperate attempt to escape the Japanese, Lexine and her family are shipwrecked.  Believing she is the only survivor, she is distraught about the loss of her family. She sets up home in the Philipines and agrees to look after two orphaned children. Desperately trying to flee from the Japanese, she encounters the American officer once again and her past comes back to haunt her. Lexine's best friend, Kathleen also survives the shipwreck and is taken in by a vicious and cruel Japanese general. Even though she is a vulnerable prisoner of war, he strangely never leases his violence on her. The mysterious tangles between the characters is played out in dramatic and momentous style, resulting in a powerful conclusion.

Another epic story. 13 Sep 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback
When I bought Joy Chambers new book `For Freedom', one thing I probably expected was it to be a good book, Wrong, this book far surpassed my expectations. I have read `Vale Valhalla' and `None but the Brave' from the same author. But this one, from the first page to page 673 it was totally, un - put - able-down.

This is one book I could recommend to anyone. It gives a very graphic account of the war in the South West Pacific during 1941 to 1945, it is a book that all children should read in our schools.

I have to say that Joy Chambers is up there with the very best Authors and meticulously researches her book subject's.

Well Done!!

I have read all Joy Chambers books and thoroughly enjoyed them all but For Freedom was something else. It was informative, educational, entertaining and totally engrossing. I couldn't put it down and have since reread it twice and enjoyed it as much as the first time I read it..It is a book I will not part with and I really hope Joy Chambers carries on writing.
