Dan Gookin loves a challenge. He must, otherwise he wouldn′t have taken on so daunting a topic as the C programming language. And as you can see from C For Dummies, Volume One, Gookin was definitely up to the task: Right off the bat, this plain–English guide to programming in one of the most widely accepted computer languages can have you coding in C just like a pro. Using your C compiler of choice –– whether it′s Borland C++, Turbo C, Microsoft Visual C++, or some other –– you′ll get the hang of the basic building blocks of C programs, from printf to scanf. You′ll master the C way of doing math and making decisions, as well as declaring and using all types of variables. Best of all, you can count on C For Dummies, Volume One (along with C For Dummies, Volume Two) to provide the best possible foundation as you advance to the latest stage of C evolution, C++

3.0 out of 5 stars Covers Basics Well 31 May 2000
By A Customer
I would reccomened this book to anyone wanting to get into c.

It Covers Basics Well, but will not teach you all the skills you will need. This is useful if you want to learn c++, and just need to understand the basics of c as this book and volume 2 will allow you to understand the basic c syntax.

However, if you intend to learn c totally, I would reccomend these 2 volumes in addition to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars For a beginner, simply brilliant. 24 May 2000

This book is great. I've programmed in Visual Basic, but you don't need to know any programming to pick up this book. Dan Gookin introduces you to C with humour, ease, and great success. I've learnt the basic syntax and keywords of C, and I'm ready to move on to some more complex books. I've just bought "C For Dummies Vol 2", again by Mr Gookin, so I hope that's as good! I'm going to buy "The C Programming Language" next, written by Kernigan and Ritchie. That's a good buy for advanced users, apparently. Keep writing!

I knew nothing about programming. I bought this book to start off,and it has been a GREAT help. It is very descriptive, explains everything without using jargon, has a quiz at the end of each part, and has a lot of comedy. I tried other books, but they were TOO technical for beginners of programming. This book teaches C step by step, and it is really fun to read. I recommend this book as a starting point for anyone who wants to get involved with programming (seeing as you can follow C off with C++, and follow that off with Java!).
5 STAR RATING! EXCELLENT BOOK!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the world of C programming 14 Nov 1999
By A Customer
I was interested in getting into C programming, but I didn't know where to start. I have previously tried languages such as Basic, and I took a course for c++ at college. One thing I learned from my experiences was that you cannot hope to learn a language without a good, sturdy printed book for reference and enlightenment.

C for Dummies is light-hearted and easy going, but gets you into the guts without too much trouble at all. I would recommend it- although some sections will not be applicable to you if you are using a Mac or Linux...

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent way for a beginner to learn C. 25 Aug 1999
By A Customer
The truth is, this is one of the easier C books to follow, (compared to the likes of "The C Programming Language", written by Dennis Ritchie, the man who created C). My only complaint about this book is the lack of brevity due to Gookins' tendency to draw out lessons that are rather self explanatory, and not to mention his strange sense of humor. I'll admit, he got a few laughs out of me, but when I was ready to get down to business and learn C, and learn it quick, his jokes got old! I bought both volumes as a package and it seems he's toned down a little more on the second book. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning C. Good luck!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to C, but.... 4 Sep 1999
By A Customer
it really is very basic and takes an age to get onto any programming functions that need to be thought about. I found that after reading Vol 1 for about a week, i was back on line ordering Vol 2. Apart from that if you a newcomer to programming then it should be fine, but if you already experienced in VB or something similar then I would suggest skimming this book, and going straight to Vol 2. Oh, but it was very funny!

I'ts a great buy. I can't stop going through it because it's so interesting. It's not boring at all. The author takes so much care to present everything in a fun manner. And he includes so many aspects. You're not missing anything with this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars A book that really is for dummies 8 Aug 1999
By A Customer
I found this book almost useless. There were too many things not realted with C (or programming for that matter). It teaches C that is not ANSI standerd. I got another book (Teach Your Self C 2nd Ed. by Herbert Schildt) that Taught me more than Dummies did (and they're about the same size with about the same size print). In fact I'm done with C for Dummies and I am still reading Teach Yourself C. I don't reccomend this book for anyone unless they can't even turn a computer on.
