CN Gilmore, Reviewer; Interzone & Foundation

Hunt has no lack of pace, colour ... there's enough battle, murder and sudden death for everyone.

Locus magazine

For those who like really old-fashioned adventure, this is an intriguing start to a new series and an impressive first novel.

Just finished reading For the Crown and the Dragon and I was pleasantly surprised by just how much Stephen Hunt has managed to inject new life into - let's face it - what can sometimes be a very clichéd genre. While sticking enough to the conventions of the sword and sorcery form, he's booted a unique steampunk'ish feel into his novel. The book reminds me a little of the energised style of China Miéville's Perdido Street Station or The Scar, although I see from the inside jacket that Hunt's work predates Perdido Street by seven years. I would have given this novel a resounding five stars, but I was a little annoyed that it leaves the reader hanging at the end. When's the concluding novel in the 'duology' coming out please?

I came upon 'For The Crown' by chance, but now I am very glad I read this novel. It enchants you right into the story, and keeps on going at a fast enough clip to encourage you to read on until late into the night; very compelling. I advise all fantasy fans to give this series a go.

Swashbuckling Tale 23 July 2002
Format:Paperback
Right at the start, this is a swashbuckling book. It is set up during the 18th century, with a strange parallel reality fantasy-land forming a background for the story.

This book got me interested because of the characters, a small military company of losers and lunatics. These guys are funny to follow around, struggling in a situation they want nothing to do with.

My only complaint is that I think it would have been more successful as a story if the actual journey started much sooner than it did.

I give it 5 stars because I was never bored reading it, indeed it makes for a very exciting, quick read. You won't be disapointed.

A fine fantasy story
For The Crown and The Dragon opens with a lot of character information and world building squeezed into quite a short space (which makes the opening heavy going). Read more

A fine addition to the sword and sorcery genre
Simply put: if you like flintlock fantasy and steampunk universes, then this novel is for you ... if this book was singer, it'd be Elvis. Well, at least Robbie Williams, perhaps.
