Adrian Mitchell's poetry reads as if he was simply writing down his thoughts as they occur. They are witty, angry, silly, moving, bitter, warm, and very accessible. There's no obscurantism in this volume at all; no references to classical mythology or literary in-jokes. Mitchell is, of course, very political, with a strong radical/left slant. But there is such genuine feeling here, a warmth of heart and love of humour that it rarely grates. And despite their apparent spontaneity, many of these poems have real depth.
My only quibble is that the quality of the paper in my edition is low. This makes some of Ralph Steadman's illustrations hard to decipher.
I dont know how much the material here overlaps with that in 'Heart on the Left' - but it's cheaper!
