"Those skilled in war bring the enemy to the field of battle and are not brought there by him."

Founded in 1993 by Shagrath, Silenoz, and Tjodalv and named after unusually shaped lava fields and rock formations east of Lake Mývatn in Iceland, Norway’s DIMMU BORGIR made their debut into the underground metal scene via unofficial rehearsal cassette ... Read more in Amazon's Dimmu Borgir Store

This album contains far more emotion and feeling behind it than the later day Dimmu releases.
It and "Stormblast" stand out as an overly emotional look at the black metal scene. Who wrote that black metal should contain just blast beats and no emotion? Why, Burzum managed to convey its message through different formats, so why should Dimmu Borgir conform with this release?
What so many people forget is that the music is all about interpretation, and this is a wonderful ambiant release that, from start to finish, shows very mature song writing for such a young group of musicians (as they were then).
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED is this and the "Stormblast" release by the same band.

This and Stormblast (original) are the best albums from Dimmu Borgir. The sound quality may be bad (for some peoples taste), but this is part of the effect. It is to convey something that is not all neat and tidy (produced), but the real world- Beauty and uglyness. The songs lyrics show this. This is a MUST BUY for any black metal fan as it shows BLACK METAL is not just blast beats and fast guitars, but something original. Maybe not original now but was then... It also shows how the band has developed and how they were in there early years. So it is must for Dimmu Borgir fans, but maybe a bit too heavy for mainstream metal fans... But this is an album that made me like there older stuff. BUY THIS if you like BLACK METAL, KEYBOARD ORIANTATED METAL or just to try something new.

In the feverish passion of the romantic spirit, Dimmu Borgir capitalize on the core beauty of black metal by emphasizing its melodic and atmospheric qualities, with progressions dictated by the flow of the music’s melodies, presenting an idealistic form of poetically evocative black metal. Portraying epic splendor in vivid atmospheric imagery of grand mountains surrounding gothic castles beyond vast forestlands, Dimmu Borgir use keyboards with as much significance to the music as guitars to illuminate the music’s expression of beauty, which, along with piano and guitar melodies, harmonizes the contrast of violent rhythm and evil vocals through the resolution awarded by descriptive, story-tale composition.

This composition as being the definition of metal songwriting is here indulged with an elegiac depth which manifests the grandeur and adventure of living in the awareness and acceptance of inevitable death, with frequent dramatic transitions in rhythm marked by an isolated riff or keyboard passage, guiding the listener into another scene of existence in which the range of possibility is indefinable, yet intuited in the understanding of the nature of universal forces.

Though structure is often complex in the style of progressive rock sectioning merged with classical sequence of dramatic events, riff patterns are a basic black metal stream of ambiguous flowing rhythmic melody, with varying degrees of extension based on the requirements of the particular thematic representation, with occasional clean tones and acoustic guitars used to provide depth in resonant tone.

This is a good album along with there classic STORMBLAST,its just such a shame that they turned into a cradle of filth grade joke mediocre type of satanic worship band,it will always be a question of what this band would have achieved had they stuck to this era style...one of the things that really aggravates me is when i find bands that is said to be influenced by dimmu borgir..and when i listen to them its always the Spiritual Black Dimensions & Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia ERA these bands sound like.. and these two albums were two great fiasco's which is a shame because Dimmu Borgir are very very talented and have what it takes to make masterpieces like for all tid and stormblast with Enthrone Darkness Triumphant being the exit for there old sound which also had its moments like with morning palace~In Death's Embrace and other great songs on that album...but all good things must come to an end unfortunately.(00). Oh well theres always Sear Bliss to turn to though if you love the old Dimmu Borgir....LUCKILY!! ;p,another AWSOME symphonic melodic black metal band from hungary i found by PURE luck..i kind of think of them as a more sophisticated dimmu borgir (BETTER INFACT) that took this early dimmu borgir sound and defined it, this is awsome stuff though good atmosphere, Classic symphonic/melodic sorrowfull black metal done right which this band also innovated,it took a few listens to get into but was worth it as i am in awe every time i listen to this now,get this and stormblast ¤ª~¨¨¯¯¨¨~ª¤

It's hard to believe these days, but back in the day Dimmu Borgir were actually making "true" Black Metal. As a fan of Black Metal but also of the softer sides of bands that brought a folk sound into Black Metal (Ulver, Agalloch, early-Opeth) I thought there would be nothing to lose checking out this album.

From start to end this album rules and features Vocals from Silenoz and Shagrath which is a nice change from the Dimmu Borgir that we all know. There is only one small thing I can say negatively about this album, there's no English translations of the lyrics. Other than that, its a great album that has a regular place in my CD Player
