4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Gem 9 Dec 2010
By Adrian Drew TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
What a remarkable movie this is. Hard-edged, cynical and totally lacking in sentimentality. The stars are most impressive and the direction puts the film way up there with Gaslight ( the superior English version). An excellent print - lovingly transferred - and a solid audio track too! Although perhaps showing its "stage" origins, it is none the less an most enjoyable and surprisingly powerful victorian romp. It won't disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cinema gem that has not dimmed with age 15 May 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
It has been at least 30 years since I last saw this gem, but I remembered how good I thought it was at the time. I was not disappointed! It remains a really good film that gets into the plot within 5 minutes of beginning. My 23 year old daughter, who is a harsh critic of films, watched it with me and was also impressed, especially by the storyline and the atmospheric cinematography commencing with a monsoon-like opening sequence at a funeral. I have no hesitation in recommending it highly, and have already done so to cinema-loving friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth watching 19 Oct 2010
By Filmbuff TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Quite an unexpected film, with a twist at the end. A good cast, excellent acting and a good story from the beginning. When Stewart Granger's character murders his wife, little does he expect the series of events that will happen, as his calculating and cunning servant desperately tries to get her man. She worships him and devotes herself to him, but, in return, he attempts to murder her, only to find he bludgeon's the wrong woman. Yet again, the faithful servant - now his housekeeper - saves him, this time from the gallows. Yet again, he desperately tries to rid himself of the lower-class girl, who has become a thorn in his side. I never expected the conclusion to be quite so ......... No, that would spoil it for you!

Certainly, a story that has murder and cunning, but a sad tinge to its entire plot and certainly that conclusion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good simple story
I love old movies simple story lacked a little intrigue. I thought the outcome was very worthy. Stewart Grainger is not one of my favourite actors so rating was lower than a 5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Footsteps in the Fog
A very sinister story of a junior maid who bravely bests her employer, even though she knows how his first wife died. High drame to the very end.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... and a wonderful musical score, too
All I want to add to the many appreciative comments here, is that Benjamin Frankel's score adds massively to the film's atmosphere - and if the title music ("Lily's Theme") doesn't... Read more
