Synopsis

Footsteps in the Fog is a cat-and-mouse Victorian melodrama in the grand tradition. Jean Simmons plays scheming servant girl Lily Watkins, who was hired by sinister nobleman Stephen Lowry (Stewart Granger) and his ailing wife. The wife dies of 'natural causes', but Lily knows better, and uses this knowledge to her advantage. In exchange for her silence, she forces Lowry to cater to her every whim. He is forced to go along lest he face the gallows, but in a switch reminiscent of the 'lost' ending of 1987's Fatal Attraction, he sees to it that Lily herself is carted away by the constabulary. Filmed in appropriately dank Technicolor, Footsteps in the Fog is an unusual foray into Gaslight territory for director Arthur Lubin, normally a comedy specialist.

Quite an unexpected film, with a twist at the end. A good cast, excellent acting and a good story from the beginning. When Stewart Granger's character murders his wife, little does he expect the series of events that will happen, as his calculating and cunning servant desperately tries to get her man. She worships him and devotes herself to him, but, in return, he attempts to murder her, only to find he bludgeon's the wrong woman. Yet again, the faithful servant - now his housekeeper - saves him, this time from the gallows. Yet again, he desperately tries to rid himself of the lower-class girl, who has become a thorn in his side. I never expected the conclusion to be quite so ......... No, that would spoil it for you!

Certainly, a story that has murder and cunning, but a sad tinge to its entire plot and certainly that conclusion.

After poisoning his wife and getting away with it, a man (Stewart Granger) is blackmailed by the household's drab little maid (Jean Simmons) who's discovered his secret. Then it becomes a deadly cat and mouse game as she becomes more and more controlling as he falls in love with another woman (Belinda Lee). Will he attempt another murder to break free from her clutches? Or will she outwit him and keep him under her thumb? All kinds of wicked twists and turns occur as they play a deadly game. This neat little atmospheric (gas lit street lamps, thick fog) thriller set in Victorian London was directed by Arthur Lubin who's never shown a particular talent for suspense before. He's best known for a series of Abbott & Costello movies like BUCK PRIVATES and the FRANCIS, the talking mule movies. Who knew he had it in him to direct a top notch nail biter like this? Granger, who usually played the stalwart hero, and Simmons, normally a great beauty, must have relished the opportunity to play against type. Benjamin Frankel (NIGHT OF THE IGUANA) did the excellent score and Christopher Challis (TWO FOR THE ROAD) did the elegant Technicolor cinematography. With Bill Travers, Finlay Currie and Marjorie Rhodes.

The Sony DVD (from England) is a very nice, colorful transfer in its original aspect ratio of about 1.77.

British acting legends-STEWART GRANGER and JEAN SIMMONS-who were also husband and wife during the 1950s also acted in a few films together-including the British classic murder thriller-FOOTSTEPS IN THE FOG-[1955,colour]and is set in the fog-shrouded streets of Victorian London. Granger and Simmons act great together here.
As he buries the wife he murdered in a rain-soaked churchyard,Stephen Lowry[Stewart Granger]thinks he has commited the perfect murder. But he's so wrong, for his quick-witted young maid Lily[Jean Simmons]knows he secretly poisoned his wife. A thriller of a film that has a suspenseful ending.
But STEWART GRANGER and JEAN SIMMONS both put in brilliant performances, that are so well acted. They also had excellent support from other cast members that included-BILL TRAVERS,FINLAY CURRIE,RONALD SQUIRE,BELINDA LEE,WILLIAM HARTNELL.
JEAN SIMMONS-like-ELIZABETH TAYLOR-when they were both younger were two stunningly beautiful ladies.
Regards,Bill.
