Format: DVD
A young man leading a bit of an aimless life and totally disillusioned with his lot meets some criminal types and gets involved in all kinds of shady activities like drugs, porn and violence.
This was made in Cardiff with a small budget but with a lot of care to get things right storywise and filmwise and this is evident in the way the plot plays out. It's not exactly an underworld gangster tale but a dark creation of how easy it is for a person to fall off the rails.
The first two thirds of the film may be a bit slow and boring with odd scenes of interest but this is all drama to set up for the final sequence of exploding action and mayhem. This is very realistic and horrible without being gratuitous.
I liked this film.

Cardiff; Drugs, Snuff, Prostitutes, Pimps, Violence and a Goldfish! 15 Sept. 2012
By Tommy Dooley - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
This was a debut feature from Gareth Evans and filmed in Cardiff for a budget so small you could barely buy a new car with it. With such scant resources I was expecting something a bit lacking, but actually was really surprised. The opening credits are very violent seeming to focus on violent/snuff attacks of random people in dark places. This is a sign post to what lies in wait for our main man - Andrew.

The plot centres around the aforementioned, Andrew (Nicholas Bool), he lives alone seems to have lost all his friends and has to endure a day job in the glamour of the local pie factory. Then they have to `let him go', probably because he is a bit dysfunctional, but they claim cut backs. With nothing but his gold fish for company he goes out and kicks seven bells out of some bloke in a club toilet for abusing another man. After the fight is taken to the dance floor he gets ejected and beaten. There he ends up in an alleyway and the creepy camera man turns up with a pole wielding punter who is told to kill Andrew. He fails and Andrew becomes their new pet to order about in a world of prostitution, horrible pimp drug dealers and voyeuristic sleaze bags who should have vacated the gene pool some generations back.

What unfolds is a story of awakenings, and a need to put things right. This is violent and psychologically messes with you, but it is not torture porn as most of it is done off camera and in a non gratuitous way. There are problems with the sound levels there are long periods with no dialogue, especially so at the beginning and I don't think anyone was writing an Oscar acceptance speech after seeing the rushes. However, this was made on less than a shoe string and it is both visceral and gripping, and you can see why Gareth Evans went on to make `The Raid'. So I for one was quite impressed, if you like your films to be predictable or Hollywoodesqe then this will not measure up, but if you want something very off the beaten (no pun intended) track, then why not give this independent effort a go.

A MUST SEE! 11 Jan. 2008
By W. Shaffer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
This film is really provocative. It made me think, and feel, and left me wanting a sequel! I found myself a little in love with the handsome Andrew, and the dark side of this film is really shocking in a nonchalant way. The actors manage to make a very nasty lifestyle seem matter of fact, which is quite an accomplishment. The cinematography is INCREDIBLY well done. And the music is really original and adds greatly to the film. You have to see this!

Blahhh! 2 Feb. 2008
By Mr. Fantastic - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
I had some high hopes for this one. Some actors were good, some were just horrible. really low budget, which would be ok, if the director could make up for it, but he did not. Generally weak. Anyone who wants a sequel to this probably shouldn't watch these types of movies (Didn't you watch the end?) If you want super depressing movie, but in a good way (which is what they were going for) get "Requiem for a dream" or the "nameless". Don't bother with this one.
