Book Description

28 Dec 2006

When Emily Kingsley arrives at the church for her eccentric Great Aunt Mary’s funeral, she is still grieving for her broken relationship with the vain, mean and unfaithful Ted, and has little sorrow to spare. At the wake afterwards, she is dismayed to learn the content’s of Mary’s will. Emily and her cousin Clemmie must go to Mali, where they are to travel by camel into the Sahara Desert to scatter her ashes.

Clemmie, fanciful and rootless, is thrilled at the chance of adventure. Emily is not. With immense reluctance, she agrees to travel to Mali, and find Timadjlalen, a place in the desert that no one has ever heard of. Why Mary chose it as her final resting place she cannot imagine, and the thought of a hot, pointless trip is almost too much to bear. But once Emily and Clemmie set foot on the Saharan sand, and begin to uncover Mary’s sixty-year-old secret, they come to understand why they must complete her journey...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Challis yet ! 22 July 2006
By Crannog
Format:Hardcover
I have become an unlikely fan of the Sarah Challis book list. She seems to this mere male to write much more believable, readable novels than the average holiday read. Each one is a veritable page-turner and this is the best yet.

Camilla - Clemmie - and Emily Kingsley are twenty-something cousins. They find at their great-aunt's funeral in the English west country that the provisions of her will present them with a modest legacy, conditional on their taking up an unusual challenge. This involves travelling to Mali, a country of which neither of them has heard before, with their aunt's ashes, where they are to be scattered in a certain remote place, far from civilisation as they have experienced it to date. Clemmie is enchanted at the prospect, Emily cynical and unwilling to participate, except to escape from a broken love affair. This counterpoint of attitude persists throughout the novel.

The story is told by Clemmie and Emily in separate chapters alternating with commentary from the elderly Beryl Timmis, who has been their great-aunt's paid companion in recent years.

There is a dark side to the story, supplied in Beryl's history of events which took place fifty years earlier, of which - at the time of the novel's setting - she has clear memories which serve to rack her conscience with guilt and a desire for forgiveness.

Romance happens, perhaps inevitably, and the last quarter of the story is packed with surprises both welcome and sinister.

Challis' gift for storytelling is supreme in this book. Descriptions of desert life, the events encountered by the travellers, the surprising outcomes, all are delicately and realistically drawn. There is a feeling that the author has left a part of herself in the desert country she describes with such skill and sympathy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful story 12 April 2006
By Teapot
Format:Hardcover
Having enjoyed reading her other works, I was especially intruiged by the title and synopsis of this latest Sarah Challis novel. It didn't disappoint.

Although the main setting of the novel is somewhat of a departure from the comfort of the English countryside, I loved the desert chapters, especially the effect the desert had on Emily and Clemmie and their relationship. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive Descriptions 23 Sep 2006
Format:Hardcover
I've just finished reading this excellent book and I must confess I'm exhausted. Why? The description of the two girls' travels in the Sahara by jeep, truck and camels, accompanied by Tuaregs is so realistic that you feel you are there with them: you feel the sun burn your skin during the day, you look into Eternity through the stars in a clear and dark sky, and you hear the awe-inspiring silence. You get well acquainted with, and appreciate the different characters - their emotions become yours, you are being carried along, laughing, weeping, furious and enthusiastic. The contents: Complying with the last will of their great-aunt, two English girls, about 26 years old and cousins, carry her ashes to a certain spot in the Sahara without knowing the reason. And little by little they change, layers peel off until they know who they are and what they want. And though there is not much action as such, the book is so interesting because you're living it that you can't put it away. I read all of Ms.Challis' books, all of them are good, but this one is to my opinion by far the best. No sex, no aggresssion, but a lot of Nature - human's and the World's.
