Amazon.co.uk Review

Shelley Webb is married to former England and Manchester United star Neil Webb so she knows all about being a footballer's wife. "Malibu-drinking bimbos who live in mock-Tudor mansions, wear white stilettos and, collectively, have a lower IQ than the average football mascot", she says of this select socio-economic group. And then she goes on to comprehensively demolish this particular stereotype in her absorbing set of interviews with 15 soccer spouses. Neil Webb's career was suddenly and cruelly ended by injury and it is events beyond these women's control--injury, loss of form, transfer to god knows where--that blights their lives. Helen Saunders- -wife of Welsh star Dean--went to Turkey with him one weekend to find that by Monday he'd signed for an Istanbul club and this was her new home. Another common worry seems to be the attention of other women. What is it about millionaire footballers that attracts pretty girls? But mostly these are the stories of ordinary girls who hooked up with ordinary guys whose careers come first. Thoughtful and enlightening, grit as well as glitz, Webb has enabled these women tell it like it is. --Nick Wroe

Product Description

The media tell the nation that footballers' wives live in mock-Tudor mansions, wear white stilettos, dance around handbags and, collectively, have a lower IQ than Paul Gascoigne. Shelley Webb, wife of ex-international Neil Webb, interviews here the women who tell it like it really is.

I read this book with much interest. As I worked in The Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, where the Manchester United players stay. Week in week out I used to watch this players go off with different women. Neil Webb was a great wominiser who used the fact that he played for Manchester United to "pull" his women. I was present when he used this great ability one night to "pull" the female singer, which led to Neil Webb being named in her divorce. Shelley wake up to what your husbands are up to when they play away. Do you think that the public are as naive as you. Yes I understand the problems of mooving the family on transfers, but these players are highly paid. This book is just another poor rate on trying to cash in on the Man. United band wagon. A pure fabrication of females on what they think there husbands life is like. Wake up girls.
