About the Author

Brian Palmer was a football referee at local and regional level for some 20 years after playing enthusiastically in his youth. He wrote extensively about refereeing in the national magazine Football Referee, and in the Reading Referee, particularly during his 18 years as editor. In 1999 he created the Reading Referees’ Association website www.readingrefs.org.uk Brian has always been able to see the funny side of football and of refereeing in particular. Over the years he has collected and invented many fine examples of the comic, which he now hopes to share with those who are in some way involved with the noble game.

When together, in dressing rooms or conferences, football referees enjoy slap-on-the-back comradeship and laughs galore. Brian Palmer's book covers some of the tales which make us laugh. We recall and add our own fun times - including incidents at our expense - to keep the fun element alive. Brian Palmer's collection reveals a welcome humorous side to the austere whistle blower which should be broadcast to all football fans. Well done, Brian!

We all think that football referees are blind, deaf and of doubtful parentage and sexual preferences They are totally boring people with no sense of humour or real knowledge of the game of football, and only do it for the money. However, this book, compiled by a retired Level 5 referee (or Class One in old money) shows that referees are the best at taking the mickey out of themselves, and are actually football lovers themselves. There are true stories, quotes from managers and players, observations of real life, with a few jokes thrown in based on real experiences of referees - witness the stories about Assessors, which only referees really know about. I thoroughly recommend this book to anybody who likes football, or indeed any sport, and it is a snip at £4.99.

This book contains a laugh a page. It reveals humour from players, fans, managers and referees points of view and includes the odd ode. It should be of interest to anyone associated with football (soccer) and their long suffering relatives. It gives an indication of the amusement referees must get from swapping tales after matches. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Having bought this for a football fan (well actually M U F C )I thought I would check that it was funny by just "dipping" into it but ended up reading it right through. Although I had heard some before they were still comical even for those of us who are supposed to not understand the offside rule. Kath Potts.

Sturdy but elegant, refreshing in its tasteful simplicity of presentation and at a very modest price, this classy new paperback, with its glossy bright eye-catching cover and easy-to-read thoughtfully large clear print with a cleverly chosen variety of typefaces to add to the interest, is a pleasure to hold and a delight to dip into for an easy, relaxing read any time to enjoy the laughs inside over and over again.

Sharing a laugh, especially when it stems from laughter at oneself, is a wonderful thing in today's all-too-serious world of ours. Brian Palmer, a long-experienced referee himself, shares with us in this book his own fun and laughter experienced through the years beneath the serious responsibiity of refereeing and the ever-consuming joy of football. So thanks, Brian Palmer, for sharing the laughter and providing us with a book that from every aspect is a winner!

Having put up with my husband refereeing for many years it made me smile to read the jokes about his precious hobby. At least this author has been able to laugh not only at his own colleagues but also get someone like me to find it funny too. Well done.

This book is good fun and easy to read. As a football fan, it makes you see that referees referee BECAUSE they enjoy the game and the fun that it can bring.... Lots of great stories and humour... thanks Brian!

So we learn that referees really do have a sense of humour! Well, you certainly need one to do the job. A nice bit of light-hearted fun for anyone interested in football, not just the men and women in black.
