Masterful and brilliat writing. Bower has the grace and skill of a classic literary novelist, with the energy and anarchy of 1980s punk rock.Reading it will change your life and make all other books obsolete. Buy it now before they sell out!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars No Frills, Pure Impact, 17 April 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Football Seasons (Paperback)
This book stands head and shoulders above the recent crop of football related trash. The hero (?) Paul Andrews is at a crossroads in his life. His career as a journeyman footballer has been cut short by injury and he is struggling to find direction. His uncertainty and macho insecurity explode in a moment of passion and extreme violence. From then on, the follows Andrews as he attempts to avoid detection. Football Seasons digs deep into the macho psyche and paints a vivid picture of the violent, negative emotions that football culture is built on, but which we aren't allowed to mention in the new candy floss era. The narrative cleverly switches from the present day to flashbacks from Andrews' inauspicious playing career to highlight this. The thing that sets this book apart is its authenticity; the uncompromisingly blunt writing style, the cutting insight into the mind of a working class 'hard man' and the use of actual events as a backdrop tell you that the author is the real deal. A rattling good story well told. Thought provoking with plenty of humour amongst the bleakness. Mick Bower has written a book that must make the fakes and the carpetbaggers (Hornby, Brimson et al) hang their heads in shame. In short, Football Seasons is the best book I've read in years.
