Product Description

Product Description

The UK may be home to the most respected football firms in the world but there are outfits in other countries which can give our hardest boys a run for their money. These are the crews who think nothing of using tear gas, meat hooks, home-made bombs and worse to make their point - gangs of organised hooligans in countries as far apart as Brazil and Croatia, Argentina and Italy, football fans for whom their team is their life. Meet the firms prepared to go to the furthest extremes defending their firm's honour.Actor Danny Dyer, star of hit film "The Football Factory", took a film crew with him to meet all of these gangs. This is the full story of what happened when he did. Join him on a journey around the hooligan world in 90 days, visiting nine countries in twelve weeks to meet the nastiest, naughtiest football hooligans on the planet. Shot at, stoned, glassed and tear gassed, they survived gunfire in Brazil and a riot in Poland and the opportunity to stand shoulder to shoulder with the foreign firms as it all goes off.Full of spine-chilling encounters, extraordinary characters and brutal clashes, this book shows that football hooliganism is alive and kicking - all over the world. This is the proof that it's not just Britain which has the most determined football fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant read on several levels - exciting and intelligent, 22 May 2008
Several cuts and then some above the usual hooli-lit, this book actually provides some insight and context to the tales of violence and passion on the terraces. Basically the written version of the TV series the International Football Factories, this is the account of what happened both when the cameras were on making that show and when they were off... and as well as providing some seriously scary moments, also shows the comedy and camaraderie in the small TV crew's adventure around the hooligan world. Nine countries in 90 days seems a tall order but Danny Dyer and his crew pull it off - and along the way this book manages to provide a little social, historical and cultural background to the trouble on the terraces.

If hooliganism is seen in this country as fat old men having a barney outside the pub on a Saturday afternoon, The Real Football Factories shows that in places like Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Belgrade, Turin, Krakow, Isatanbul and Moscow it's an awful lot more complicated - and more serious - than that. The chapters on South America, Turkey, the Balkans and Russia are especially strong on the wider social, economic and political context behind hooliganism.

All in all it's a great read on several levels - if you like the excitement and banter of the TV series and want to read tales of boys kicking off and dodging trouble around the world then you won't go wrong here... but if you're also interested in a bit more depth and context and want to find out about global hooliganism from a more considered, wider perspective, this is also an essential read.

In conclusion - a brilliant read for fans of hooli-lit, football culture or even social studies. Five out of five.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing read..., 27 Feb 2008

I watched the series on Bravo and was blown away so I bought the book to find out what it was like to make it. I got a real sense that these places were tough and really sensed the fear that they were all feeling. The interesting stuff is some of the trouble that the crew got up to when they weren't filming, i dont want to spoil it but Dyer's escapades in Poland are the stuff of legend. Total respect to the people that made this and they've thrown in some photos to see behind the scenes...they look like they are sh*tting it.

All in all a good read and a credit to the Hooligan Book Bibliography.
