Product Description

In this second collection of recent articles (the first was Solid Fool's Gold), groundbreaking sabermetrician and baseball historian Bill James takes his unique way of looking at the world and applies it to topics as diverse as the major league players who went out on top, whether ground ball pitchers are as good (or as bad) as people think, do hitters like Yasiel Puig have hot hand streaks (they do) and why (that's a different question), and do teams have tough stretches and soft patches in their schedules (they do) and how to mention them. Along the way, James takes several detours to discuss his views on classical music, fiction versus non-fiction, keeping will animals in captivity, conservatives and liberals, and several other things that interest or offend him. He even includes a couple of his favorite old baseball stories and a new way to summarize something's or someone's history in exactly 10-25-50-100-200-500 words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bill's brilliant use of baseball card stats 12 May 2014
By JagBag - Published on
Even though Bill's advanced work is owned by the Red Sox, what he's publishing publicly is some of the best work of his career. What's especially impressive is that he's doing it with baseball card data.

He's not relying on baseball card data alone; he's combining some of his own methods (Win Shares, Game Scores) with metrics most sabermetricians gave up a long time ago (Wins, Losses, ERA). The result is analysis that is

- immediately comprehensible
- deftly written
- nearly as reliable as far more advanced metrics
- often provocatively surprising

It's a trade of 5% reliability in exchange for massive gains in accessibility, applicability, and enjoyability.

Bill's readership might be down but it shouldn't be. This book is an excellent example -- a modest one -- of the body of work Bill has been compiling since beginning his work with the Red Sox. The book and a subscription to Bill's website ($3/month) are highly recommended, especially for laymen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bill James Being Bill James 1 Jun 2014

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you have read Bill James stuff before, well, here is another one. I love reading Mr. James and agree with most of what he says. There are many topics and all about the game we love! What I love best about reading Bill James material is, if I wait a few years, I can read it again and get something else out of it! Bill is full of wit and wisdom and does his usual fabulous job on this book. If you like Bill James, you'll like this book. If you don't, buy it anyway; you might just learn a thing or three!
