Jean Carper has written a truly, easy to read, helpful book on how to look after your body the natural way. My wife first used this book to cure me from a persistant virus that not even antibiotics could cure. I was truly amazed at the speed I recovered, since I had suffered for weeks before we discovered this "gem of a book". I would recommend this book to anybody seeking the "Natural way" to cure the body. I am purchasing a second copy for a friend.

This book is broken down into easy to reference sections, eg How to Avoid Heart trouble, or Migraines in Children. Each section is then further broken down in magazine-like articles on all manner of ailments and how we can avoid/mitigate/ improve them. Indispensable for the home - we are what we eat

Carper is one of several very thorough writers about health and how we can take charge of our own well being, who combines populist, easy to digest (!) explanations whilst ALSO citing the research papers from which she gets her main text. Its sort of 'Daily Mail Health Pages' but/and giving detailed sourcing of medical journals which the curious or more scientifically minded can verify.

I'm particularly enthused by approaches to health care which empower us as individuals. As Hippocrates, ye father of ye medicine, said around 450BC

'Let food be your medicine, and medicine your food'

Wise words. If the food we eat now were the food eaten then, I guess H would have felt it necessary to be less pithy in his statement.

For readers who enjoy Carper's style and substance, another American author inhabiting the territory is Earl Mindell - whose various 'Bibles' :New Herb Bible: How to Use Herbs to Revolutionise the Way You Work, Play, Sleep, Feel and Heal ; The New Vitamin Bible ; The Food Medicine Bible: What You Can Eat to Help Prevent Everything from Colds to Heart Disease to Cancer make interesting, enthusiastic and empowering reading
