Here is a wide variety of Jamaican food, mainly traditional but given an up-to-date slant. There are many old favourites and quite a few new ideas to get the gastric juices flowing. The recipes are accompanied by glorious photographs and there is a good section on where to buy authentic Jamaican crafts. Yes, there are omissions in the list of recipes, but in a book of this size there is much to read and, more importantly, to cook.

Its outward appearance is of a "coffee table" book but do not fear, this book is destined to become stained and marked and annotated as all good cookbooks should as it will spend much of its life on the kitchen preparation surface!

As cookery books go this one is a fantastic introduction to not only Jamaican cookery but also the foods of the Caribbean. There are pages of delicious recipes accompanied by mouth-watering photographs. The introduction has a glossary of Jamaican fruit and vegetables along with a summery of the culture of Jamaican cookery.

My only criticism of this book would the measurements and cooking pots used, there is no explanation of what these are. However armed with this cookery book the delights of coco bread, ackee & saltfish, plantain tarts, run down and fried fish all become delicious Jamaican dishes which can be created very easily at home.

Missing recipe 23 Jan 1999

As a native of Jamaica I knew exactly what to look for in this book. Although this book contained many wonderful recipes from my country I was dismayed to find that it did not contain the recepe for Jamaican rum cake or any kind of fruit cake recipes. This cake is a tradition in most Jamaican households during the Christmas holidays and is very popular at weddings. A Jamaican wedding is not complete without rum cake or fruit cake.I hope the author will take this into consideration when writing the international edition.
