** 'Patrick Holford is one of the world' leading authorities on new approaches to health and nutrition.' DAILY MAIL

Product Description

FOOD IS BETTER MEDICINE THAN DRUGS is an important and potentially controversial book from top nutritionist Patrick Holford and leading health journalist Jerome Burne. Brilliantly researched and based on solid scientific trials and illuminating case histories, Food is Better Medicine than Drugs will revolutionise the way you think about your health and put you back in charge. The authors reveal how modern medicine has become distorted and is now, for reasons largely to do with profit and power, heavily dependent on prescription drugs. They look at common health problems (pain/arthritis, heart, depression, diabetes, memory, hormones, digestion, breathing, infections etc) and compare the effectiveness of nutrition-based approaches with today's potentially harmful commonly used medicines.

5.0 out of 5 stars a doctors nightmare, 2 Sep 2007
By Duncan Hellyer "mmmmmmmmmmmm" (england) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I think the guys who wrote the bad reviews must be doctors or have not read the book properly. Why do people think that everything must be coverd by a government qualification, isnt this book in the large part common sense. The book is not just about 'eating your greens' it is far more than that and anyone that has been scared into taking nhs drugs should read this book.
Patrick maybe out to make money, but i have been studying at the ION for a while and the course (which Patrick founded) is absolutly spot on. The research in this book and the optimum nutrition bible is based on many years of clinical practice.

1.0 out of 5 stars bad science drivel, 11 Feb 2007
By Steve T (London) - See all my reviews
Holford offers rudimentary common sense dietary advice (basically - eat your greens) dressed up with all manner of pseudoscience and poor research - he has famously talked dangerous drivel about vitamin C being more effective against HIV than antiretrovirals in one of his other equally dubious tomes.

He has no relevant graduate qualifications and 'nutritionist' is not a protected term (yes you and I are also nutritionists). Hes all about making money and his 'celeb' TV status - he is not a scientist, and shouldnt be trusted any more than the above reviews - all five star, all written on the same day, all by people who have never reviewed a book before on Amazon, and all in curious PR speak. hmmmm.

avoid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great advice, 14 Feb 2007
This book gives great advice on how to deal with common conditions (eg diabetes, high blood pressure, menopausal symptoms, depression) through diet and, where appropriate, vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements. Holford shows how common drugs often have side effects that necessitate a second or even and third drug to counteract - ie a drug may deal with one symptom but cause many other problems. He offers tested alternatives whilst advocating that a patient works with his/her GP to bring about change to a more natural approach. He sensibly does not advocate a sudden stop in taking prescription medicines. He offers advice on how to prevent diseases and gives a vision of how GP's could work more closely with nutrition professionals to prevent disease, reverse disease and minimise drug use. A book well worth reading if you care about your health.
