Book Description

9 Oct 2006
FOOD IS BETTER MEDICINE THAN DRUGS is an important and potentially controversial book from top nutritionist Patrick Holford and leading health journalist Jerome Burne. Brilliantly researched and based on solid scientific trials and illuminating case histories, Food is Better Medicine than Drugs will revolutionise the way you think about your health and put you back in charge. The authors reveal how modern medicine has become distorted and is now, for reasons largely to do with profit and power, heavily dependent on prescription drugs. They look at common health problems (pain/arthritis, heart, depression, diabetes, memory, hormones, digestion, breathing, infections etc) and compare the effectiveness of nutrition-based approaches with today's potentially harmful commonly used medicines.

More About the Author

Patrick Holford BSc, DipION, FBANT, CHNC pioneers new approaches to health and nutrition. He is the founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London (Europe's leading training centre for nutritional therapists), is Chief Executive of the Food for the Brain Foundation and the author of over 30 books.

He is widely regarded as Britain's best-selling author and leading spokesman on nutrition and mental health issues, hence being frequently quoted in national newspapers from the Daily Mail to the Guardian. Patrick is also popular on radio shows and national television as a presenter, interviewer and guest.

Patrick started his academic career in the field of psychology. While completing his bachelor degree in Experimental Psychology at the University of York, he researched the role of nutrition in mental health and illness. He became a student of the late Dr Carl Pfeiffer, director of Princeton's Brain Bio Center, and later a student of Dr Abram Hoffer, Director of the International Schizophrenia Foundation in Canada, who were leading the field in mental health and nutrition. In 1980 he started treating mental health patients with nutritional medicine.

In 1984 Patrick founded the Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION), a charitable and independent educational trust for the furtherance of education and research in nutrition. Today, ION is the largest training school in the UK offering a diploma course in nutritional therapy and is widely respected as a leading edge organisation by professionals and media alike. Patrick formed a relationship with the late Dr Linus Pauling, who became the Patron of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition.

In 1986, Patrick started researching the effects of nutrition on intelligence, collaborating with Gwillym Roberts, a headmaster and student at ION. This culminated in a randomised controlled trial testing the effects of improved nutrition on children's IQ - an experiment that was the subject of a Horizon documentary and published in the Lancet in 1988. This study was the first of its kind in the world and considerably raised awareness of the role of nutrition in intelligence.

During his years as director of ION, Patrick ran many educational campaigns that brought attention to the importance of zinc and pyrolluyria, disglycaemia, antioxidants, methylation and homocysteine, IgG food allergies, essential fats in mental health - factors still greatly underestimated in the treatment of mental illness. Patrick retired as Director of ION in 1997 to focus on writing, teaching and researching.

Patrick was awarded an honorary Diploma from ION and is also an Honorary Fellow of BANT (the British Association of Nutritional Therapists), and a Member of CHNC (The Complementary and Natural
Healthcare Council). In 2003 he founded the Brain Bio Centre at ION, a treatment centre pioneering the optimum nutrition approach for mental health, to formalise the treatment of mental health with nutrition and to act as a research centre. The Brain Bio centre is owned by the Food for the Brain Foundation, a registered education charity set up by Patrick to promote awareness of the link between learning, behaviour, mental health and nutrition. In 2007, Patrick was appointed Patron of South African Association for Nutritional Therapy, and in 2014 he was inducted onto the Orthomolecular Medicine Hall of Fame.

Patrick lectures and conducts workshops throughout the world on a wide range of topics, to the public, health professionals and the medical profession. In the UK he presents around 50 workshops and lectures a year. His knowledge, personality and enthusiasm, together with his strong scientific approach, helps him to stimulate lively debates, simplifying complex issues and help the public and professionals expand their understanding of health issues. Patrick is frequently involved in government campaigns and debates concerning optimum nutrition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Relevant source of information 10 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
Whilst at times this seems to be more of a lecture, the information is broken down well into sections and the recommendations can be followed reasonably well - some vitamins / foodstuffs might be hard to source though. Overall a good and reliable source of information

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 30 July 2010
By Tazz Rainbow VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
I just borrowed this book from the library and I'm going to purchase myself a copy because I just can't leech all the information I want out of it in such a short space of time! This book covers a wide range of ailments and how to cure or help them using vitamins, minerals and common sense. I have known for quite some time the big hoohaa with the pharmaceuticals. I got an illness about 3 years ago and chose my medication I wanted to deal with it. Upon arriving at the doctors I was told I was not allowed the medicine of MY choice, only of theirs. Ever since then I have travelled and studied to get what I want. Now I am on the medicine of MY choice, which is a natural one and weirdly banned in the UK, I am now going to set about fixing the rest of my body so I can move into a pill free future. There's just something so annoying being told you have to take a certain pill for life. It's like a red flag to a bull for me. I refuse to be a slave to the pharmacy and I will fix my illness myself ! I think this book is going to be key in helping me do this. It was actually rather scary as you read through the health check up and personally I was quite shocked at what state my body seems to be in. I thought my many 'ailments' were normal. According to Patrick, they are not ! So I now know that how I feel is far from how I could feel. So then the book outlines how you can start to fix everything. I'm making slow changes to my diet and lifestyle as I want these changes to be permanent. Friends of mine are asking for advice also, which is great, I'd love to help make them healthier also.

This lost a star because I am just a regular joe and the book is very scientific and has much biology which I know is great for those who want the hard facts.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book gave my body back to me. 16 Aug 2011
By Bri
Format:Paperback
I had 2 minor strokes in 2007, my doctor put me on a cocktail of drugs, statins etc, I came across this book a year later in my library, after reading it, I then started to look at food and natural medicines, as statins were causing me all sorts of problems, aching joints, muscle problems etc, I stopped taking the prescribed drugs after reading about all the natural alternatives in the book and on line, I told my doctor 3 months later, she was not very happy and gave me a load of tests, 2 weeks later I received a letter off of her saying my blood pressure and cholestrol were perfect, whatever I was doing it was working, keep it up, since then I have recommended this book to others, and can say honestly, 5 people with different problems who were on chemicals are now on natural alternatives, and have their lives back. Thank you Patrick & Jerome for giving me my life back, I am 62, play golf 4 times a week, and walk at least 15 miles a day when not playing golf, plus exercise with weights etc, I feel so alive compared with how I was on drugs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book 21 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book makes you take a sharp intake of breath as some of the information is a little alarming. However its information should be available to all and I am so glad I have read it. At least I can make a decision with an educated guess now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Food for thought 17 Nov 2012
By Wend
Format:Paperback
This book is not a quick fix of ailments, like coughs, colds, aches and pains. It is a book that with in depth reading leads you to an approach to health that will hopefully help to address long term conditions. It may either prevent the need for conventional medication or possibly help people to reduce or come of medication. I have yet to see the results and would only recommend this to people serious about their lifestyle and what they put into their body.
