5.0 out of 5 stars The only book of its kind 12 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
Felipe Fernandez-Armesto establishes the significance of food in cultural identity throughout history and around the world. Full of astonishing facts and rich in learning, Food: A History is ambitious in coverage and successful in achieving its objective. It is still the only book of its kind.

1.0 out of 5 stars Snobby remarks and sloppy research 3 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
I looked up the author and wondered how he had time to write all these books and one explanation is the lack of research; in considering cannibalism he refers to Issei Sagawa as someone who "disposed of an unwanted girlfriend" by eating her. A quick search tells anyone that this is not correct and a wholly inappropriate description of what happened. If you can stomach his dismissive remarks about other food authors, judgmental observations about the food of the hoi polloi and his leaden attempts at capturing the style of Alan Davidson then you might read something you haven-t read before but whether it-s true is quite another thing.
