5.0 out of 5 stars Small group jazz in it finest form 14 April 2002
Format:Audio CD
If, heaven forbid, I could have only one CD from my collection this would be it. The MJQ are not only intellectually challenging but are thoroughly enjoyable and foot tapping too.

This CD is no exception, recorded in 1956, it is a fine example of the group as a well-developed and integrated outfit. Fontessa the track has a great Connie Kay drum solo or should I say symbol solo in it. The ensemble playing is terrific; how well Lewis and Jackson fit together whether backing or in duet is demonstrated throughout the recording. Percy Heath's contribution is always there in the background but make no mistake background or not it is vital and keeps the group moving.

This CD is a great example of small group jazz in it finest form.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Resistance of Memories 21 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
A very long time ago when I was heavily into Traditional Jazz a friend played me the title track and I was awed. Fifty odd years later I finally got my own copy and - it all seemed a bit less exciting. However you can't really fault the MJQ so I still like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars MJQ: ;Fontessa' 27 Aug 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Strictly for connoisseurs of 50's modern Jazz; this album was the ultimate in musicality and sophistication. The skill and craftsmanship brought together by this group will never be equalled - let alone surpassed. Having said that . . . anyone who considers contemporary jazz (the stuff of the late 20th and early 21st centuries) as worthy should definitely avoid anything by MJQ - enough said.
