Product Description

Product Description

This book is a biography of the life and work of Freud. It attempts to provide an analysis of the mind at work, and the story of a long and intricate process of discovery. This book takes the form of uncompromising analysis, but the author is in tune with the subject to the extent that the personality and feelings of Freud and his contemporaries emerges from this book.

From the Back Cover

This remarkable book is a biography of an unusual kind. It is at once the life of a mind at work, and the story of a long and intricate process of discovery. It takes the form of a stern and uncompromising analysis, and yet the author is so much in tune with his subject that the personality, and even the feelings, of Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) and his contemporaries emerge from that analysis. Readers will also sense the effect of the frightening enlargement of the known area of human unhappiness that Freud's work revealed.

This Second Edition features a new introduction which takes into account recent developments in Freudian studies and analysis.

"A lucid, well-organized exposé of the theory and the manner of its development."
TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT

"No mere potted guide this, but a genuinely original study. Richard Wollheim has not only produced one of the best available introductions to Freud's life and work, he has also written it with extreme clarity and with as little intrusion as possible."
THE TIMES

"A good, concise account of the life and works of Sigmund Freud, useful for someone seeking a general view before plunging into the thought of the great man himself."

By A. J. Cull VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This book, by the late Richard Wollheim, is an excellent introduction to Freud's ideas. It traces the evolution of Freudian thought, showing that nothing was set in stone and that few of his ideas were exempt from revision. Were Freud alive today, his theories would have continued to develop. The book also dispels the myth of Freud's complete fixation upon sex as the driving force behind all human activity. Wollheim's style is formal and needs a certain amount of concentration, but if you are a studying to be a psychotherapist, you will find this book a rewarding and insightful read.
