Biography

Salif Keita came into the world both cursed and blessed. With each new ordeal, its salvation; with each new obstacle, some inspired ruse or unstinting strength to continue his path. And here lies the enigma. For example, how could he accept being disowned by a father who refused the inevitability of an albino son? What reply could he give to face the hostility of his own caste when he, a Keita,… Read more in Amazon's Salif Keita Store

Product Description

From Amazon.com

The Mali superstar has kept a low profile since Amen (1991), his Joe Zawinul-produced bid for crossover stardom, and a new generation of Afro pop marvels led by Baaba Maal have stepped into the vacuum. Returning to Paris and working with producer/keyboardist Wally Badarou (ex-Level 42), Keita is in exquisite voice although he too often takes a back seat to the extended, horn-driven funk jams typified by Sumun and Mandjou. --Jeff Bateman

Format:Audio CD
Salif Keita has described his music as resembling a tree: the roots are the african tradition, the trunk is jazz and the branches are funk music. This album displays these aspects with all the confidence and diversity of a mature master. The opening track, Tekere, is an uplifting Afro-beat jive that gets you dancing in your head at the very least. The second track, Mandjour, is a re-working of an early Keita song that was a big african hit. The new version is atmospheric and funky with extended solos riding over the grooves. After a tour through a wide range of musical idioms, the album ends with two haunting, acoustic balads that demonstrate Salif Keita's authentic griot background to superb effect.

Great CD, best of Salif Keïta's to date! 19 Feb 2000
By "squidchowmein" - Published on Amazon.com

I first heard the haunting title track watching a movie on the independent film channel - La Vie sur Terre.. That was my first exposure to Salif Keïta in the US, and I decided to take a chance on the CD. I enjoy every track, although it does tend to be a little heavy on the bass and brass than I would prefer.. but Salif's voice is amazing.. it took a trip to Mali for me to recognize the beauty in Malian rhythms and melodies, now I am trying to introduce everyone here the music. This has my highest recommendation for anyone who just doesn't quite feel like Backstreet pop or Ms. Aguilera does it for them.

Salif Keita at his best 20 Sep 1999
By andrew.barfoot@tesco.net - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Wonderfully produced album brings a blend of traditional West African and Western music that is not too "westernised". The Horn and Saxophone arrangements are brilliant and it keeps the infectious rhythms and precussive instrumentation without any loss of its West African roots. The guitar work is brilliant (KOUYATE) A brilliantly revamped version of MANDJOU. AFRICA is so infectious in its beat. FOLON really full of emotion - The icing on the cake.

Salif's Classic 11 Jan 2000
By S.L. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
"Soro" might have been the trendsetter, but this release is Salif's classic! I don't know what kind of juju was happening in the studio during the making of the this one, but all the elements are right on. A near perfect recording--and an absolute MUST HAVE for fans of Salif and Afro-pop in general.
