From the Inside Flap

'A highly distinctive poet. His work as a translator would be impressive enough, but he is also a poet of power and skill in his own right' Gerry Cambridge

'It is good to be reminded, by this substantial collection of sonnets, of the continued pleasure which is still to be obtained from metre and rhyme. Good observation, spiced with moments of black humour and social satire, makes this a book to be relished for its unexpectedness.' Edwin Morgan

'The sonnet ‘Two Boys’ wields a force available only to a writer who understands the structural potential of this poetic form inside out. It made me cry. I regard Dick Davis' ‘Baucis and Philemon’ as the great sonnet of my generation, and I hope that in Stocks we are seeing Davis’ worthy heir in the making.' Timothy Murphy

'Mike Stocks’ poems are part of a general humane concern for the disruptions, pleasures and ironies of ordinary life… He is in firm command of his various forms, but not in such a tyrannical way that the poems simply march to order… physically vivid, inventive, but controlled by manners of line, breath, cadence and rhyme.' George Szirtes

Beautiful, thoughtful, insightful and accessible poetry. Having thoroughly enjoyed Mikes two completely different novels White Man Falling and Down Deep ( published under the name Mike Crofts), I have not been disappointed by Folly.
Any more books in the offing? It would shame if not???

So much talent, so little time 11 Nov. 2008

Thanks to the road directions of another very gifted poet, Jessica A. C. Snyder, I was able to find my way to [...], and there to read three of Mike's poems: "Two boys," "An e-mail" and "Everything in its place." These pieces alone would justify the purchase of "Folly."

Mike Stocks is an INCREDIBLY gifted poet. Is he also just another "flower...born to blush unseen" and unread? I'm certain that if Thomas Gray were alive and well, Mike wouldn't. He'd already have a following. And Thomas Gray would be at the head of that following.

Poets have a hard time making ends meet. Mike is a poet. Although there is happily nothing in his bio (which you can find at the same site) to suggest "entitlements" or that he might somehow be deserving of patronage, he is -- at least in my opinion -- deserving of that and much, much more.
