Product Description

Product Description

During the winter of 2008, sitcom writer Bob Smiley decided to join his fellow writers and walk the picket line in support of the Writers Guild of America. A golf junkie since boyhood, Smiley reached out to ESPN and got a freelance gig writing golf humour columns from the point of view of the average 18+ handicapper. When he realised the writers' strike was going to last longer than he'd anticipated, he decided to attempt a feat many sports fans fantasise about: to follow Tiger Woods from the gallery for every hole of an entire season. So with a wife and two small children at home, Smiley hit the PGA trail, travelling on the cheap for months on end. His adventures took him from San Diego to the deserts of Dubai, through the gates of Augusta National, and to, arguably, the greatest U.S. Open of all time at Torrey Pines, where in June of 2008 Tiger defeated the opposition on only one leg.(His other one was debilitated by a torn ACL and fractured tibia.) Following his inspiring victory at the U.S. Open, Tiger announced that he was going straight into surgery and would sit out the rest of the 2008 season. Although this turn of events eliminated the possibility of a Grand Slam (winning all four Majors in a single calandar year), Tiger's strength and courage in the face of golf mortality add a whole new dimension to his story - and to Smiley's.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this book, it is hopeless, 24 Mar 2009
By Peter Lynch (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I picked this up in the airport in the USA thinking I could read it and send it on to my father, a keen golfer. It is very poor and is just a journal of some bloke who followed Tiger around with some anecdotes that don't involve Tiger. It is a book around Tiger and the photograph is misleading as you think you are going to get some input from the player, you don't. The writing is shallow, the anecdotes are uninteresting and it is just a knock off which catches suckers like myself. Avoid. I want my money back.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun introduction to following Tiger, 13 Nov 2009
This is a great holiday read. An out of work scriptwriter persuades his wife to let him follow Tiger Woods for a whole season (of course the season did not go as planned due to Tiger's knee). What follows is an insight into what it is like following the Tiger, along with thousands of others. It effectively tells you how to get the best out of attending a big golf tournament and, without a doubt, it opens the mask of the Tiger just a little.

I thought, as golf books go, this is worth a read and I am glad I did so.
