Product Description

Product Description

From Abbotts Ann and the Maiden's Garlands to the Tichborne Dole and St Swithun's forty days of rain, "Folklore of Hampshire" looks at the county as never before. Hampshire is proud host to traditions, customs and legends that may seem strange to the people of the twenty-first century but were very real to the Hampshire folk of yesteryear. While some of these customs have died out others are still with us, continuing a rich heritage. This book reveals some of the county's saints, witches, superstitions, music, ghosts and legends, and talks to the 'Hampshire Hogs' who ensure that folklore from the past retains a place in modern society. Penny Legg is a writer and photographer, resident in Southampton. A member of the Society of Women Writers and Journalists, the National Union of Journalists and the Bitterne Historical Society, she edits "The Woman Writer" magazine and tutors non-fiction for The Writers Bureau.

5.0 out of 5 stars Folklore of Hampshire by Penny Legg, 10 Jan 2012
This review is from: Folklore of Hampshire (Paperback)
Folklore of Hampshire is packed full with well researched information about folklore in Hampshire. Topics include saints, royalty and celebrated citizens, which include Saint Swithun. We all know the well known saying if it rains on Saint Swithun's day it will rain for forty days and forty nights and if it is fine it will be fine for forty days and forty nights. We learn about how he came to have so much influence over the weather. You can also read all about Jane Austen and her background and connection to Hampshire. There are many more interesting people featured in this book.

The book also covers Hampshire traditions, customs and legends such as haunted places and buildings and ghostly stories, strange creatures, witches, highwaymen, folklore songs and much, much more.

Whether you live or are from the Hampshire area or if you are interested in history or folklore you will like this book. I am not from the Hampshire area and have never been there but found the book really interesting. There is also a good collection of photographs of the subjects covered in the book. This is the second book by Penny Legg that I have read and I am looking forward to reading more of her work.

This review is from: Folklore of Hampshire (Paperback)
This is one of those books you can read from cover to cover, or simply dip into. Informative (especially chapter 2 about ghostly goings on) for both residents as well as visitors to the county.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Folklore Stories, 12 Aug 2010
By
This review is from: Folklore of Hampshire (Paperback)
I had previously never read a folklore book. Consequently, I had no idea what to expect. What I discovered was a cornucopia of interesting facts and information, covering a broad scope of topics including: annual customs, ghostly tales, witches and other stories and legends. All presented with an obvious infectious enthusiasm by this debut author, quickly hooking me into turning another page to discover more.
Previously my attitude to some of these issues was sceptical to say the least. However, Penny's informative and entertaining style of writing brought these historical folklore recollections to life. By the end of this well researched and indexed book I had learned a great deal, including the origins of Lloyds bank, and began to think folklore, an untapped genre for me, was now firmly on my list of must reads.
Even if you have never read a folklore book before - try it. Because the chances are you will be pleasantly surprised and much better informed by the time you reach the last page. Doubtless you will be unable to resist the urge to visit and explore many of the intriguing locations mentioned in this revealing book.
