2.0 out of 5 stars Visually appealing, but poor technically, 10 Feb 2004
By

This review is from: Folk Vests: 25 Knitting Patterns and Tales from Around the World (Paperback)
The patterns contained in this book are visually very appealing, but are let down by the lack of care given to their construction.

In the majority of cases, the designer has not bothered to calculate appropriate pattern changes for the different sizes, but has chosen to change the guage (and therefore needle size) instead. This leads to a situation where the drape of the resulting garment can be totally inappropriate, and can lead to the waste of a large amount of work and yarn.

That said, there is a great deal of inspiration ot be had for those knitters who are willing to re-chart the designs given.

5.0 out of 5 stars If I only had one knitting book, this is it, 23 Jun 2003

You know when you buy a book of patterns expecting that if you're lucky, maybe one-third will appeal? This one isn't like that; I want them all. Not only are the designs stunning - some simple, some more demanding; the attention to detail is incredibly clear - probably the best I've seen. I even learned some new techniques, and I thought I knew everything. Even the plain designs - simple waistcoats in stocking stitch or garter stitch - have that extra little something which comes from really good design. Then there are some classic fair isles, a couple of good garments using multi-colour wool for a fair isle effect. The book is American, but yarn weights and other conversion information is given. Really, my only problem is which one to do first.

5.0 out of 5 stars polti 950 steam cleaner, 9 April 2011
This review is from: Folk Vests: 25 Knitting Patterns and Tales from Around the World (Paperback)
I bought the Polti 950 steam cleaner for Mother's Day as well as a knitting pattern for a balaclava and gloves and Folk Vests. I hid everything in my bedroom but Mother found it before Mother's and pecked my head rotten until I allowed her to have pressies early.

Firstly, she was disapointed that she didn't get the red one. Next, she complains,

"The bit and pieces don't fit together," she says, "look. This round thingy doesn't go into the oval thingy. It's the wrong shape."

I email the dealer to ask for advice.

"I want to do the floors," Mother pecking head again, "I've done fridge, bottom half of big windows. I've done bathroom. Wait till you see. Everything gleams. Have you heard from dealer yet? Have you seen inside of fridge? I keep going in for nothing it's so clean. Sparkles. And I've done sofa, seats and chairs, bottom half of curtains, mattresses and pillows. Are you listerning? Because I want to do floors now. I'm ready for floors. So I need you to try to fix thingyies so they fit. Can you give it another go?"

"Are these all the parts?" I says, examining instruction leaflet,"I want two 7's over here. 5, 6, 12, 12a, 12b, 6ab and c over here. Don't need them. Give me 8," I scrutinize diagram again," and where is 8D?"

"8D? What's 8D?" asks Mother, "what's 8D look like?"

"It looks like this," I says, pointing to the diagram, "it's the connection accessory to the big brush."

She takes the instruction leaflet from me, examines it carefully, "Iv'e not seen 8D. Do you think they forgot to put it in the box at the factory because accidents do happen?"

"Go. Look. Now," I says,"everywhere you've been," my turn to peck head.

Twenty minutes later she reapears with 8B. "Where was it?" I ask.

"Behind baked beans, bread and alpro soya I forgot to put away," she says,"I'm thinking next Mother's Day can I have a red one for upstairs?"

I email dealer apologies from me and Mother. In conclusion, Polti Steam 950 excellent purchase. She is delighted with Polti steam cleaner 950,Folk Vest and knitting pattern for balaclava and gloves and more importantly she is much too busy with new toys to peck head.

A blessing and she will be getting a red Polti steam cleaner for upstairs next year.
