5.0 out of 5 stars The only sock book you'll need!, 28 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Before I bought this book I had only ever knitted a scarf! I have now knitted eight pairs of socks (in the last nine months).

This book is comprehensive. It begins with an inspiring history of sock knitting across the world and culture ; excellent clear diagrams of how-to (Nancy Bush presumes nothing about your previous knitting experiences) ; then there is an excellent basic sock pattern which covers all size possiblities (baby, child, women, men); next up are different heels and toes you can try ; finally, and best of all are the most beautiful patterns all based on existing socks from various museums and come across in different countries. The patterns are all explained completely and beautifully photographed. Someone who hasn't read a pattern before can refer to the glossary and explanations at the beginning and will never fear them again.

I have looked at all the available sock books and this is the only one with truly covetable socks and clear explanations. Ms Bush really knows her subject and her enthusiasm is infectious.
This book is really the only you'll ever need!

4.0 out of 5 stars Never knit a boring sock again!, 29 Mar 2002
By Sheena (smckleeds@aol.com) (Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
The historical section which starts this book elevates the simple sock to an art form and links various cultures by means of their sock-making techniques. Strange but interesting!
The pattern section is beautifully photographed with clear instructions and useful illustrations. Eighteen delightful patterns from around the world offer something for everyone and there is a very useful section on heels, toes and general techniques to inspire the knitter to design their own masterpieces. My only quibble, and it is a little one, is that the knitting needle sizes and yarn weights were not given in their UK equivalents - although with a little experimenting I soon worked it out.
All in all, I know this is a book that I will use and enjoy for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars a good intro to sock knitting, 13 Sep 2000
By A Customer
this book is good - it starts with an historical section, followed by sock patterns. There's a basic sock pattern to start you off, and a description of various styles, with the patterns giving good practise of them - a very good book to introduce the non-sock knitter to the background and sock styles around, with a pain-free initiation into sock-knitting.
