5.0 out of 5 stars Synopsis 15 Sep 2010
Format:Hardcover
Bob Pegg, himself a noted folk musician and recording artist, describes and analyses the condition of English folk music and argues persuasively for a view of folk music refreshingly different from that of many folk romantics and preservationists

Of particular interest are Bob Pegg's portraits of folk musicians, his analysis of folk songs and his comparison of so-called ruby songs with folk songs.

Running in parallel with the main text are four illustrated sections containing many rare and fascinating photographs. This is a book which would appeal to the many thousands of 'folk' enthusiasts up and down the country.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and eccentric book on English folklore. 1 Feb 2002
By R J PEGG - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Bob Pegg's book, succinctly titled, not only summarizes many aspects of the history of English folklore studies (more exciting than it sounds, especially when he examines erotic folksong), but also offers unique insights into his own fieldwork in the Yorkshire Dales during the 1960s.
When the book was published the ideas about erotic folksong - inspired by the work of the great American folklorist Gershon Legman - caused some considerable upset, though today they seem very tame.
Some of the ideas in this book are very 19th century. For a partial redress of these crimes against the intellect, see the author's later publication, Rites and Riots (Wildwood House, 1981)for a more contemporary viewpoint.
