I had many of the tracks already but it was interesting to hear the other artists though MacColl's interview was very short and could have been longer.

Good Recording, Just Not My Cup Of Tea 11 Dec. 2012
By Stephen Mann - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Ewen MacColl is a legend in Folk circles, and has written songs everyone knows but have no idea who wrote them. I bought this recording because I wanted to hear the writer's own take on one of my long-time favorite songs: Shoals of Herring.

These recordings are from two concerts performed for the BBC, and are live. The sound is reasonably good, well up to BBC standards, The lyrics first-rate and the recordings very well preserved, but I'm afraid I don't appreciate the technique or the vocals to be found here. Indeed, the version of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", written by MacColl for Peggy Seeger and sung by her, sounded dreadful to me.

This is, of course a matter of taste and experience.

You will also hear his daughter on this recording, as the family performs a long, multi-movement White Wind - a story of the disenfranchisement of the South African aboriginal people at the hands of the newcomer white race. This piece had some resonance for me, but I haven't the stamina to listen to it repeatedly.

There is an interview with MacColl at the end of the recording, a short one, that is very well worth listening to.

I don't feel the replay value of this album is going to be high in my case. Your mileage will certainly vary, especially if you are a dyed-in-the-wool one-hand-over-the-ear folkie.
MacColl not singing on at least 2 songs....a disappointment! 19 Feb. 2014
By Poodle Lover - Published on Amazon.com
I am not writing a review for the entire album but rather 2 of individual songs I purchased: Thirty Foot Trailer and Shoals of Herring. Neither song is performed by Ewan MacColl but rather Ian Campbell. I didn't recognize this from the sound clips and should have researched the album more when I couldn't find it on All Music Guide. Although Campbell's versions are very good, indeed, I believe I already own them on other CD's/LP's.
