Product Description

Product Description

Now an eaglerly anticipated institution in it's own right, this is the double CD with a track from every nominated artist in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards plus tracks from the 4 semi finalists from the BBC Young Folk Awards 2011.

Review

"If the decision to give the 1960s veteran Donovan a lifetime-achievement trophy at the Radio 2 bash prompted a certain amount of head-scratching among aficionados, the double album of nominees nonetheless contains more than its share of gems. Jonny Kearney and Lucy Farrell's take on the traditional song Hares on the Mountain has to be one of the most haunting recordings of the year, and the freethinkers who make up Bellowhead get proceedings off to a raucous start with New York Girls. Richard Thompson and the Unthanks are on hand to scatter some stardust. Fay Hield's Mad Family adds a cheerful touch of nursery-rhyme gothic as the strings whirl and scrape."
-- The Sunday Times - Clive Davis

5.0 out of 5 stars A real treat 19 Mar 2011
By Big G
Format:Audio CD
I agree with Roger Vincent when he says this is a real steal for under a tenner. It certainly is; the problem is that once you listen to these tracks, you do what I do and buy a couple of the albums which the tracks come from. So, albums by Cooper, Boyes & Simpson and Bellowhead are on their way to me. "In the Cool of the Day" is a spine-chilling a capella track of the Jean Ritchie song and, for me (amongst a whole clutch of great tracks) is the best. Bellowhead start the double album off at an exuberant pace and there is a mixture of fine singing and instrumentals by those artists I am quite familiar with (Carthy * Waterson, Richard Thompson, Andy Cutting and Michael McGoldrick)and those I am less so (Heidi Talbot, Kris Drever and Fisherman's Friends).

Really, this is such a good way of promoting the wonderful diversity of folk music that I might have to look at previous compilations. As I say, a real treat, particularly for those of us who like folk music but need a little more familiarisation.

5.0 out of 5 stars folk awards 2011 1 April 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
A very good album with different aspects of the present folk scene. I was particularly moved by the Chris Wood song "Hollow Point" which is a real piece of contemporary folk, commenting on present day news.

I haven't listened to folk much in several year, this is a great way back in, consistently good tracks and some artists I'll be buying more of.

1.0 out of 5 stars Folk music where time has stood still!
This is a very disappointing selection. On playing this I got the feeling that it could have been produced 40 years ago in terms of songs, sound and style. Read more
