Product Description

Synopsis

"If Pop Art is about liking things, as Andy Warhol said, then folk art is about loving things" - Jeremy Deller. This is a book about the creative life of Britain and the first attempt since the Festival of Britain to document the popular and folk art of the present day. Organised by Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane, "Folk Archive: Contemporary Popular Art from the UK", presents a personal selection of objects and actions, containing elements of ambition, humour, pathos and resistance, which present us with invaluable evidence of life in Britain today.

The stuff your neighbours do may be so mad it's fascinating. Jeramy Deller and Alan Kane are largely interested in the stuff we do together on certain 'special days'. The people who do it don't call it art - they call it festival, carnival, St ?'s day. While gathering all this disparate stuff together Deller and Kane have made a beautiful book, but have also problematised a whole area of activity that had hitherto been untouched by the ravenous bourgeois art hounds. Oh well, great book!

This is a visionary book 15 Feb 2009

Format:Paperback
From the moment you see the Preface published on the cover of the book, you know this is a very different book from almost any other you've encountered.

Essentially, this book is a visual documentation of contemporary "folk" activities taking place across the UK. It reads like a social anthropologists' visual diary. Compiled by artists Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane (probably much better known in the UK than in the US), they gather pictures of obscure british festivals, handmade signs, costumes, customized cars, prisoner's art, and countless other things as a way of representing current folk art. They are both making an argument about the nature of folk art today, as well as providing a visual feast.

If you like this book, then you will like Public Phenomena by Temporary Services, or any of Tibor Kalman's books.

Highly recommended.
