Amazon.co.uk Review

As remakes go, The Fog has some grisly deaths that gore-mongers will appreciate, and star billing for Tom Welling is guaranteed to attract younger views and Smallville fans; however, the movie will have most horror buffs thinking fondly of John Carpenter's original. A combination of ghost story and slasher thriller, it's a typical example of why remakes are a risky endeavor, especially since the 1980 film does not rank with Carpenter's best. This time, residents of the seaside community of Antonio Island, Oregon, are falling prey to deadly specters that emerge from a spooky fog and are seeking revenge for one of the town's darkest secrets. As the body count rises, Selma Blair livens up this otherwise lukewarm horror pic in the role originated by Adrienne Barbeau, and genre buffs will enjoy in-jokes that refer to the original film and Carpenter's career in general (including one character named "Nick Castle," a reference to one of Carpenter's closest collaborators and fellow directors). Unfortunately, the film's also lost in its own fog of narrative confusion and lack of casting chemistry, but that shouldn't stop die-hard horror fans from checking it out. --Jeff Shannon

1.0 out of 5 stars havent the foggiest, 12 Dec 2008

As a fan of the Fog I was intersted in what original director John Carpenter and producer the late Debra Hill were doing re-making their own film. What a mess of a movie. In the original Adrienne Barbeau is excellent as the single mum/radio station owner. Jamie Lee Curtis is well cast as is her mother Janet Leigh. The cast in this mess look like teen Baywatch rejects. The music in the original by Carpenter himself brought suspense, tension and a murky sense of forboding. This nonsense is like a pop promo gone wrong.Avoid this film like the plague.I agree with the other reviewer who was reluctant to give this film one star.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stick to the original., 4 Jun 2011
This review is from: Fog, The [2005] [DVD] (DVD)
I'm not a hater of horror films being remade as i've actually enjoyed alot of them, though this may be the worst along with April Fools Day. The original is a favourite of mine that i rank up there with Carpenters best, Halloween being the best. It stars him from Smallville and her from Lost, so that gives you an idea of it's target audience. Selma Blair is the movies slight saving grace, but even that compared to Adrienne Barbeau in the original seems dull. It's essentially the same plot as the original but the far superior performances from Barbeau, Lee Curtis, Atkins, Leigh and a great Holbrook drive the original along superbly, it's a dark, grisly film. This remake seems like a dumbed down movie that should be shown on Nickleodeon. As a big Carpenter fan, it saddens me that he was a producer on this. I'm still struggling to come to terms with the pathetic romantic way they chose to end this one, those who have seen it will know what I mean. I'm glad I own it though, because when watching this movie directly followed by the original, you can't help but wonder why the original didn't win best picture at the oscars.
